Bonifacio
Corsica's iconic image: the upper town perched on white cliffs overlooking the turquoise sea, direct access to the Lavezzi Islands (nature reserve).
Bonifacio is one of Corsica's most iconic images — a medieval Genoese fortified upper town perched on white limestone cliffs 70 metres above the turquoise Mediterranean, at the southernmost tip of the island, facing Italian Sardinia (12 km away, the Strait of Bonifacio). The city was founded in 828 by the Marquis Boniface II of Tuscany, then became Genoese in the 13th century (Genoese Bonifacio is listed among the major sites of Mediterranean heritage).
The upper town (Citadel, intra-muros) unfolds its narrow medieval lanes, Genoese fortifications, towers, intimate squares. Essential visits: Standard Bastion (panoramic view), Genoa Gate (main entrance, still-functional drawbridge), Saint-Antoine necropolis (medieval graves carved in the cliff), King of Aragon's Staircase (187 steps carved in the limestone cliff, 15th-century legend, sea access 70 m below), Sainte-Marie Majeure Church (12th-16th centuries, 650 m³ cistern), Podestat House.
The port (below, in a protected natural cove — one of the most beautiful natural ports in the Mediterranean) hosts yachts and cruise ships. Seafood restaurants, terrace bars. Essential cruises: sea caves (Sdragonatu cave, Saint-Antoine, calanques) — €25-35/person, 1h30; Lavezzi Islands (nature reserve 10 km away, white sand beaches and turquoise water worthy of the Caribbean) — €40-55/person return, full day.
The beaches around Bonifacio are among Corsica's most beautiful: Saint-Antoine (on foot from the town, wild beach), Cala Longa (5 km), Piantarella (10 km, kitesurfing), Sperone (golf and chic beach, 8 km), Tonnara (12 km, wild). And of course the Lavezzi Islands (marine nature reserve, 10 km by boat) with their turquoise waters — the quintessential Corsican experience.

Our verdict
Bonifacio is one of France's most iconic images — the Genoese city perched on white cliffs 70 m above the turquoise sea. Allow 2-3 days: upper town visit (Standard Bastion, King of Aragon's Staircase, lanes), sea caves cruise (1h30), day to Lavezzi Islands (paradisiacal turquoise waters). Combine with the southern Corsica region: Porto-Vecchio (30 min), Palombaggia (35 min), Sartène (45 min) for 5-7 days. Visit in May-June or September for the best conditions (reduced crowds, reasonable prices, sea still warm in September). Avoid July-August for doubled prices and saturation. Accessibility: direct flight to Figari (30 min) or ferry to Porto-Vecchio (30 min).
