Our verdict

Annecy is one of Europe's most beautiful Alpine cities — turquoise lake among the world's purest, picturesque Old Town ("Venice of the Alps"), direct Alpine access. Allow 2-3 days for the city and lake (Palais de l'Isle, lake tour by bike, swimming, châteaux). Combine with 2-3 days in the Alps (Chamonix + Mont Blanc, or ski in winter) for 5-7 days. Visit in June-September for the lake (swimming, sailing, biking), in December-March for skiing. Avoid July-August for absolute crowds. If possible, sleep in Talloires or Menthon-Saint-Bernard (quieter shores) to avoid the central Annecy crush.
