Sharm el-Sheikh

One of the world's finest diving and snorkeling destinations, in the Ras Mohammed National Park at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula.

4.60Sinaï

Sharm el-Sheikh is Egypt's major premium beach resort, located at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Gulf of Suez meets the Gulf of Aqaba to form the Strait of Tiran. Developed from the 1980s after the Sinai's return to Egypt by Israel, the city stretches over some 30 kilometres of coast, punctuated by bays (Naama Bay, Sharks Bay, Sharm el-Maya, Ras Nasrani) that host around 200 hotels and resorts, from modest options to luxury all-inclusive 5-stars. It is today one of the leading beach destinations in the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, with an international airport serving most European capitals directly.

But the major draw of Sharm is not the resort itself: it is the Red Sea. The waters bathing the tip of the Sinai rank among the world's finest for diving and snorkeling, thanks to a rare combination of some of the planet's best-preserved coral reefs, exceptional visibility (often 30-40 metres), spectacular biodiversity (over 1,200 fish species including 17% endemics) and immediate accessibility from shore. The Ras Mohammed National Park, created in 1983 at the southern tip of Sinai, is probably Egypt's most famous dive site: its sheer drop-offs plunging into the blue, its gardens of purple and orange soft corals and its schools of barracudas, groupers, rays and reef sharks make it an international sanctuary. Further north, Tiran Island and its four reefs (Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, Gordon) offer some of the planet's finest underwater landscapes. For non-divers, snorkeling from shore (Naama Bay reef, Sharks Bay) is enough to discover extraordinarily varied marine life. Beyond diving, Sharm offers classic resort life — pools, groomed beaches, animation, international restaurants, Naama Bay nightlife — and serves as an ideal base for excursions to Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery (2.5 hours by road).

What we love

  • Diving and snorkeling among the world's best: Ras Mohammed, Tiran Island, coastal reefs
  • International airport with direct flights from most European capitals (4-5h)
  • Near-guaranteed sun year-round (350+ days per year)
  • Very wide hotel offer: from family 3-star to luxury 5-star all-inclusive
  • Ideal base for Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery excursions

What to know

  • City lacks architectural charm: succession of resorts, no historic centre
  • Naama Bay very touristy and sometimes noisy in high season
  • Extreme heat in July-August, very intense UV year-round
  • Commercial pressure in nightlife zones (touts, hawkers)

Frequently asked questions

How many days for Sharm el-Sheikh?+
For a pure beach and diving break: 7 nights, the classic one-week holiday format. To combine with a day excursion to Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery, plan 8-10 nights. For a diving live-aboard cruise to the deep south wrecks (Brothers Islands, Daedalus Reef), add 7 more nights. Most package holidays (TUI, EasyJet Holidays, Jet2) are 7-night all-inclusive from European cities (4h30 flight).
Which hotel to choose in Sharm?+
The offer is huge (200+ hotels). Main zones: __Naama Bay__ (lively, nightlife, restaurants, walkable), __Sharks Bay__ (quieter, 10 km north, magnificent beaches), __Nabq__ (15 km north, ideal for families), __Hadaba__ (southern hills, many 4-5 star resorts with views), __Sharm el-Maya__ (old town, fewer beaches). For shore diving, favour Sharks Bay or Hadaba. For nightlife, Naama Bay. For family quiet, Nabq.
Do I need a visa for Sharm?+
Useful note: UK, EU, US, Canadian and Swiss nationals can obtain a __free Sinai visa__ valid 15 days on arrival at Sharm airport, provided you stay strictly in the south Sinai (Sharm, Dahab, Nuweiba, Saint Catherine Monastery). To go to Ras Mohammed, Cairo or elsewhere in Egypt, you need the classic tourist visa (USD 25 for 30 days, on arrival or online e-visa).
How does diving work at Sharm?+
The offer is huge: dozens of PADI, SSI or CMAS certified dive centres, hotels with their own integrated centre, introductory dives for beginners (€60-80), day trips to Ras Mohammed or Tiran (€50-90, 2 dives + lunch included), 3-7 night live-aboard cruises to the best southern sites (from €800). The most famous sites: Yolanda Reef (wreck of a porcelain toilet cargo), Shark and Yolanda, Ras Mohammed Drop-off, Jackson Reef at Tiran. For snorkelers, Naama Bay reef and Sharks Bay are accessible from the beach.
Is Sharm el-Sheikh safe?+
Yes, the southern Sinai Peninsula (which includes Sharm and Dahab) is extremely secured by police and military presence. Several checkpoints control entries and exits. The situation is radically different from north Sinai (formally avoid this area, presence of armed groups). Stay in the southern zone (from Sharm to Saint Catherine, via Dahab and Nuweiba) — completely safe. Only annoyances remain classic tourist issues (touts, inflated prices in Naama Bay).
What excursions from Sharm?+
Several main options: (1) __Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine Monastery__ — 11 pm departure for the night climb up Mount Sinai and sunrise at the summit (2,285 m), then visit the Orthodox monastery founded in the 6th century, return around 2 pm — €50-90 per person; (2) __Cairo in 1 day__ — morning domestic flight, visit Giza + Egyptian Museum, return in the evening, €250-400 per person; (3) __Dahab and the Blue Hole__ — 1h30 drive, day of diving or snorkeling, €40-80; (4) __Quad and desert__ — 2-3h quad bike in the Sinai desert with Bedouin dinner, €40-70.
How do I get to Sharm el-Sheikh?+
__Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport (SSH)__ welcomes direct flights from most European capitals: London Gatwick (5h, EasyJet, TUI, Jet2), Manchester, Paris (4h30, EasyJet, Transavia, Egyptair), Brussels, Geneva, Amsterdam, several German, Italian and Russian cities. Count €200-450 return depending on season on low-cost airlines. Airport-hotel transfers are usually included in all-inclusive packages; otherwise, taxi at €15-25 for Naama Bay, €30-40 for outlying hotels.

Our verdict

Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the planet's great beach destinations, and certainly the best for combining guaranteed sun, exceptional diving and European hotel comfort 4-5 hours from Paris or London. The resort itself lacks architectural charm but its underwater reefs (Ras Mohammed, Tiran Island) are among the world's finest. Ideal for a one-week winter break, a honeymoon, or as a beach extension to a cultural trip in Luxor and Cairo. Come ideally between October and May for pleasant temperatures and optimal diving conditions.
