Bayahibe
The authentic and exclusive alternative to Punta Cana — charming fishing village, ideal base for Saona Island (one of the world's most beautiful beaches) and diving in Parque Nacional del Este.
Bayahibe is the authentic and exclusive alternative to Punta Cana — a preserved 19th-century fishing village on the Dominican Republic's south-east coast, 110 km from Santo Domingo and 90 km south-west of Punta Cana. Unlike the massive Bávaro tourist enclave, Bayahibe has preserved its Dominican village charm — colourful fishing boats in the bay, quiet alleys, lively central square in the evening, fish market. Some fifteen 4-5 star all-inclusive resorts (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, Dreams La Romana, Catalonia Bávaro, Be Live Canoa) sit on the neighbouring coast but away from the village itself, preserving its authenticity.
Bayahibe's geographical position is exceptional. The village is the official gateway to Parque Nacional del Este (420 km², the Caribbean's largest terrestrial protected area), which shelters Saona Island — regularly ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches — and Catalina Island — preserved coral reef, one of the Caribbean's best diving spots. Proximity to these two treasures makes Bayahibe the perfect base for excursions: 20 minutes by speedboat from Bayahibe port to Saona (vs 1h30 by catamaran from Bávaro), more exclusive and direct vibe.
The Bayahibe beach (arc-shaped facing the village) is smaller than Bávaro's 30 km — 800 m of white sand and palms, calm turquoise sea, family and local atmosphere. Further on, Dominicus Beach (2 km away, facing the main resorts) is the most polished beach of the area — fine white sand, shallow water, ideal for kids. Bayahibe resorts are generally more upscale and quieter than those in Bávaro, with better value: Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus (5-star family), Dreams La Romana (5-star family), Catalonia Bávaro Beach (4-star), Be Live Canoa (3-star family), Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach (4-star).
The pitch is clear: Bayahibe offers the best compromise of paradise beach + preserved nature + Dominican authenticity. Less formatted than Punta Cana, more accessible than Samaná, perfect for those wanting a quality beach stay with memorable nature excursions (Saona, Catalina, del Este park). The reference airport is La Romana (LRM) 30 min from Bayahibe, but Punta Cana (PUJ, 1h15) remains the most served from Europe.
What we love
- ✅Authentic fishing village: preserved alternative to massive Punta Cana and Bávaro enclaves
- ✅Gateway to Saona Island: 20 min by speedboat vs 1h30 by catamaran from Bávaro, more exclusive excursions
- ✅Exceptional diving and snorkelling: Catalina Island (preserved coral reef), Parque Nacional del Este
- ✅Resorts generally quieter and more upscale than Bávaro (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, Dreams La Romana)
- ✅Less sargassum than Bávaro thanks to Saona Island protection and local currents
What to know
- ❌Smaller Bayahibe centre beach (800 m) than Bávaro (30 km) — prefer Dominicus Beach
- ❌Access from Europe: few direct flights to LRM, 1h15 transfer from PUJ (Punta Cana)
- ❌Limited nightlife compared to Punta Cana (entertainment mainly in resorts)
- ❌Saona Island excursion can be crowded in high season (Bávaro catamarans)

Our verdict
Bayahibe offers the Dominican Republic's best compromise for those wanting an all-inclusive stay with a touch of authenticity and direct access to natural wonders. Preserved fishing village, quality resorts (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, Dreams La Romana), gateway to Saona Island (one of the world's most beautiful beaches) and Catalina Island (exceptional diving), Parque Nacional del Este nearby. Our recommendation: 5-7 nights at Bayahibe to enjoy Saona, Catalina and del Este excursions, combined with 2-3 nights at Santo Domingo (2h drive, UNESCO) for the cultural dimension. Avoid July-October (sargassum + hurricanes), prefer December-May for optimal conditions. Always check recent resort reviews (quality varies). If hesitating between Bávaro and Bayahibe: choose Bávaro for ease and variety, Bayahibe for charm, nature and diving.
