Punta Cana
Over 250 4-5 star all-inclusive resorts spread over 30 km of beaches among the Caribbean's finest — the most polished Caribbean destination for families and couples seeking a comfortable beach stay.
Punta Cana and the East is the Dominican Republic's main tourist region — a coastline of over 60 kilometres stretching from the easternmost tip (Cabo Engaño) down to Bayahibe in the south, concentrating most of the country's all-inclusive beach offering. Over 250 4- and 5-star resorts, two international airports (Punta Cana PUJ and La Romana LRM), white sand beaches among the Caribbean's finest, ultra-developed tourist infrastructure: this is where most European, American and Canadian packages to the Dominican Republic are sold.
The region divides into three distinct hubs. Bávaro-Punta Cana (the eastern tip, where PUJ airport and the majority of resorts sit) is the tourist backbone — 30 km of continuous fine white sand beach lined with extraordinarily calm turquoise sea (protected by coral reefs 100-500 m offshore), over 200 hotels, full infrastructure, maximum accessibility. The default choice for a first stay. Cap Cana (just south of Punta Cana) is the luxury exclusive enclave — Eden Roc, Sanctuary Cap Cana, Hyatt Ziva, Margaritaville Island Reserve, Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, private marina. Calmer, more upscale vibe. Bayahibe (1h15 further south, facing Saona Island and Parque Nacional del Este) is the alternative hub — fewer resorts (15-20), preserved fishing village, ideal base for excursions to Saona and Catalina islands, more authentic and exclusive vibe.
The pitch is clear: these destinations are built for the easy, comfortable beach stay, with no logistical worry. Direct charter flights from Europe, included transfers, decent to very good all-inclusive resorts, exceptional beaches, total safety within hotel grounds. Most stays sell as packages (charter flight + transfer + 1-week resort) at €700-2,500 per person depending on season and category. The flip side: no visible Dominican authenticity from inside a resort — leaving the enclaves is mandatory to meet the real country.

Our verdict
Punta Cana and the East is the Dominican Republic's tourist backbone — the world capital of Caribbean all-inclusive, organised around 30 km of exceptional beaches and ultra-polished tourism infrastructure. The pitch is clear and well executed: comfortable beach stay, total safety, direct charter flights, maximum accessibility. Our recommendation: for a first Dominican trip, choose Bávaro for ease, Cap Cana for luxury or Bayahibe for preserved authenticity and Saona Island access. Always combine with 2-3 nights in Santo Domingo (UNESCO) so you don't reduce your trip to a beach enclave. Avoid summer for sargassum and hurricanes, prefer December-May. Always check recent reviews for resort quality (the Dominican Republic shows significant variation between properties).
