The Caribbean's only cable car, the 2nd oldest military fort in the Americas (1577), pastel Victorian houses and economical Playa Dorada resorts — the cultural and beach base of the Dominican north coast.
Puerto Plata (320,000 inhabitants with metro area) is the provincial capital of the Dominican Republic's north coast — founded in 1502 by Nicolás de Ovando, it preserves a colonial historic centre with pastel Victorian houses (legacy of the 19th century when the city hosted a significant English Antillean and North American community come for the tobacco and amber trade). The historic district, around Independencia park, has been undergoing renovation since 2015 — restored façades, pedestrian streets, atmosphere recovered.
The city takes its historic name from the Amber Coast (Costa del Ámbar) — the Cordillera Septentrional mines supply Dominican blue amber, one of the world's rarest fossil resins (the Dominican Republic and Burma are the only two global sources). The Puerto Plata Amber Museum displays spectacular specimens (insect, feather and leaf inclusions) dating back 15-40 million years.
The main tourist attraction is the Teleférico de Puerto Plata — the Caribbean's only cable car. It connects in 6-7 minutes the base (at 200 m altitude, access from centre via Calle Antonio Ricart) to the top of Pico Isabel de Torres at 793 m altitude. Modern cabin (renovated 2019), 18 seats, departures every 15 min from 9am to 5pm. At the top: Christ the Redeemer (16 m sculpture, inspired by Cristo de Río), tropical botanical gardens (endemic orchids, giant ferns), exceptional panoramic viewpoint over the north coast (Puerto Plata, Sosúa, Cabarete, up to 50 km visibility on clear weather), café-restaurant. Rate 600 RD$ (€10/person) return.
The Fortaleza San Felipe (1577) is the 2nd oldest military fort in the Americas after those in Santo Domingo. Located at the bay's northern entrance, it preserves its original coral stone structure and houses a small military museum. 1h visit, 100 RD$.
6 km east of the centre, the Playa Dorada hotel zone groups some thirty 3-4 star all-inclusive resorts in a gated complex with golf course. It's the economical beach option of Puerto Plata — rates notably below Punta Cana (1-week packages from €600-900 in low season). Playa Dorada beach (1 km of golden sand) is decent but no more — for better beaches, transfer to Sosúa (20 km) or Cabarete (30 km).
Our recommendation: Puerto Plata merits 2-3 nights as cultural base (cable car, fortaleza, historic centre, amber museum) combined with a beach stay at Cabarete or Sosúa. The Puerto Plata + Cabarete + Samaná northeast combo is one of the best 10-14 day Dominican trips.

Our verdict
Puerto Plata is the cultural and economical beach base of the Dominican north coast — less formatted than Punta Cana, less sporty than Cabarete, more accessible than Samaná. Three main attractions: the Pico Isabel de Torres cable car (Caribbean's only one), Fortaleza San Felipe (1577) and the Playa Dorada hotel zone (3-4★ economical resorts with packages from €600-900/week). Our recommendation: 2-3 nights at Puerto Plata for the cultural dimension, combined with a beach stay at Cabarete (kitesurfing) or Sosúa (crescent beach), then possibly Samaná (3h east) for a complete 10-14 day northeast trip. If you want exclusively the beach, prefer Cabarete or Sosúa to Playa Dorada. Avoid September-October (hurricanes), prefer December-May for optimal weather. Check recent resort reviews (variable quality).
