Typical 2-3 day Puerto Plata itinerary:
Day 1 — Pico Isabel de Torres cable car (morning, 2-3h, €10/person). Ride to 793 m, panoramic view, Christ the Redeemer, botanical gardens. Favour morning for maximum visibility. Lunch in historic centre. Afternoon: Fortaleza San Felipe (1h30, 100 RD$, Torre del Homenaje) and walk in historic centre (Independencia park, restored Victorian houses Calle Beller, Iglesia San Felipe Apóstol). Amber Museum (350 RD$, exceptional specimens).
Day 2 — Damajagua waterfalls (full day, €30 with equipment, transport and guide). 27 cascading falls in the Cordillera, descent with abseiling and natural slides in limestone pools — one of the country's most popular adventures. Accessible all levels (route adapted to physical condition). Free afternoon at Playa Dorada (beach, golf, spa).
Day 3 — Excursion to Sosúa (20 km, magnificent crescent beach, Jewish museum, seafront restaurants, half day) then Cabarete (30 km, kitesurf beach, international vibe, lunch, half day).
Other activities: Brugal Rum Distillery (visit + tasting, €15-20). Monte Cristi National Park (1h30 west, day €60-90, mangroves, pink flamingos, El Morro 242 m). Santiago de los Caballeros (1h30 south, Cibao capital, Heroes Monument, Amber Museum, authentic Dominican vibe). Amber mines (Las Cuevas, La Cumbre, direct purchase possible). Maimón Bay beach (15 km west, quieter).
Nightlife: limited in Puerto Plata centre (prefer Cabarete for international vibe). A few bars on the malecón, casinos in big hotels. Plaza Indios Casino and Hemingway Café are the main options.
Shopping: amber and larimar (Dominican semi-precious stones, world exclusives) — prefer recognised jewellers (Harrison's, Galería de Ámbar de Puerto Plata) to beach vendors. Dominican cigars (Cibao, Romeo y Julieta Dominican Republic). Brugal rum (the national distillery is at Puerto Plata).
