Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need on Hvar?+
Three to four days are ideal to explore the island's diversity: 1 day in Hvar Town + Pakleni Islands, 1 day in Stari Grad + UNESCO Plain, 1 day in the southern vineyards (Sveta Nedjelja, panoramic road). For those who really want to settle in and enjoy it (beaches, restaurants, nightlife), allow 5-7 days. Avoid 24-hour flash visits by ferry from Split — you'll only see Hvar Town, which doesn't reflect the island's richness.
Where to stay on Hvar: Hvar Town, Stari Grad or Jelsa?+
It all depends on your profile. __Hvar Town__: nightlife epicentre, yacht marina, smart restaurants, partying until 4am. Expensive, noisy in high season. __Stari Grad__: former fishing town with Venetian alleys, medieval port, quieter, near the car ferry arrival. Ideal for couples seeking the authentic. __Jelsa__: lovely fishing village, the quietest, local atmosphere, peaceful bay for swimming. Ideal for families and lovers of tranquillity. Allow 30-45 minutes by bus between the three.
How do I get to Hvar from Split?+
Several options. __Krilo or Jadrolinija fast catamaran__ Split → Hvar Town: 1h, €28-35, passengers only. The most practical option without a car. __Jadrolinija car ferry__ Split → Stari Grad: 2h, €7 passenger + €50-70 car. Book your car __several weeks ahead__ in July-August. In 2026 some catamarans also link Hvar directly with Dubrovnik (3h30) and Korčula (1h30). From Split-Kaštela airport, taxi + ferry transfer is possible but long — prefer a combined transfer through an agency (€60-80 per person).
When are the lavender fields in bloom on Hvar?+
The __lavender bloom__ peaks in __June__ (mid-June to early July depending on year and altitude). The main fields are in the eastern part of the island, around the villages of Velo Grablje (abandoned but stunning), Brusje, Vrisnik and Gdinj. Several producers offer visits + tastings + shop (essential oils, soaps, lavender honey). Harvest happens with scythes at the end of June / early July. Outside this period you'll see the fields green or regrowing, but few flowers.
Are the Pakleni Islands worth the trip?+
Absolutely. It's the __unmissable nature experience__ on Hvar. The archipelago of 21 islets 100 metres offshore from Hvar Town has the area's most beautiful beaches — Palmižana (the main one, sandy, restaurants), Stipanska, Jerolim (nudist), Mlini, Marinkovac. Crystal-clear water (30 m+ visibility), wild coves, quality snorkelling. Water taxis from Hvar Town port: €5-15 per person one way, departures every 15-30 minutes. For a quieter experience, hire a boat or kayak. Allow a half to full day.
Is Hvar really expensive?+
Yes, one of the __most expensive destinations in Croatia__, alongside Dubrovnik. Hvar Town concentrates the highest prices: hotels €250-600/night in high season, restaurants €50-100 per person, private beach €30-50 per sun lounger per day. In Stari Grad and Jelsa, prices are 30-40% lower. To save: sleep in an __apartman__ with locals (€80-130/night for two), eat in a local konoba (€25-35 per person), enjoy free public beaches. Skip the trendy beach clubs (Hula Hula, Carpe Diem) unless they're your reason for coming.

Our verdict

Hvar is one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful islands — exceptional climate, varied landscapes (lavender, vineyards, limestone), UNESCO heritage (Stari Grad Plain), refined gastronomy. But it's also one of the most polarising: Hvar Town in July-August has become an avowed nightlife epicentre that will either seduce or repel you depending on your profile. Our advice: sleep in Stari Grad or Jelsa (peaceful, authentic, 30-45 minutes from Hvar Town by bus) rather than in Hvar Town. Plan a half-day trip to the Pakleni Islands, a full day in the southern vineyards (Sveta Nedjelja, Ivan Dolac, panoramic road), and use Hvar Town for sunset from the Španjola Fortress. Visit late May-June (lavender bloom) or September (harvest) — and absolutely avoid the 4-day Ultra Yacht Week in mid-July.
