Central Dalmatia combines ancient heritage, island hiking, nightlife and wine tourism with an intensity hard to match elsewhere in Croatia.
In Split, exploration begins in Diocletian's Palace. Saint Domnius Cathedral (former mausoleum of the emperor), peristyle with Egyptian columns, Roman substructures, Diocletian Cellars in the basement — allow three to four hours for the essentials. Outside the palace, walk along the Riva (the seafront promenade), explore the fish market (Ribarnica) and the fruit market (Pazar), climb Mount Marjan by the wooded trails (1h from the centre). For sunset, the Marjan viewpoint or the peristyle terraces are unmissable. Urban beach: Bačvice, famous for its local water ball game (picigin).
In Trogir, a half-day is enough for the essentials: Saint Lawrence Cathedral (thirteenth century, portal sculpted by master Radovan), Kamerlengo castle, Cipiko palace, medieval alleys. The evening atmosphere on the Venetian walls is particularly beautiful, especially in May-June.
On Hvar, the typical day combines a visit to Hvar Town (ducal palace, Saint Stephen Cathedral, Fortica fortress with sweeping view of the Pakleni Islands), boat excursion to the Pakleni Islands (Palmižana and Stipanska coves, snorkelling), and late afternoon at the Lavender farm near Velo Grablje for essential oil tastings. On the east of the island, Stari Grad (UNESCO, Greek agricultural polje) and Jelsa offer a more peaceful atmosphere. Recommended beaches: Pokonji Dol near Hvar Town, Dubovica between Hvar Town and Stari Grad.
On Brač, the unmissable is the Zlatni Rat beach in Bol — arrive early to avoid the crowds. The climb of Vidova Gora from Bol (3-4h round trip, 778 m elevation gain) offers from the summit the most spectacular panorama of the Croatian islands. Also visit Pučišća and its stonemasonry school (one of the last in the world still active), and Škrip, the oldest inhabited village on the island.
On Vis, organise a boat excursion to the Blue Cave of Biševo (morning), combinable with the Green Cave and Stiniva bay (voted best beach in Europe in 2016). On the island, visit the Vugava vineyards in Vis Town, the picturesque port of Komiža and the Hum summit for sunset. The family konobas of Vis (Roki's, Pojoda, Lola) serve authentic island cuisine hard to find elsewhere.
