Frequently asked questions

How long do you need to visit Ephesus?+
Allow 3-4 hours for the main site (Magnesia Gate → Library of Celsus → Great Theatre → Vedius Gate), with 1 additional hour for the terrace houses (Yamaç Evler, 700 TRY supplement, absolutely worth seeing). With a half-day to full day, add the Basilica of St John in Selçuk (1h, tomb of Apostle John), Temple of Artemis (15 min) and House of the Virgin Mary (1h, 7 km from the site). Complete visit: 5-7 hours.
How to avoid crowds at Ephesus?+
Three strategies. __Arrive at opening (8am)__ — cruise tourists landing at Kuşadası only arrive at 10am. __Visit in low season__ (April, May, September, October, outside July-August) — crowds are divided by 3-4. __Enter via Magnesia Gate (top of the site)__ to descend towards the Library of Celsus opposite the standard tourist flow. In high season, expect 30 min queue at entry and 1h-1h30 to photograph the Library of Celsus without crowds.
Should you pay the supplement for the terrace houses (Yamaç Evler)?+
Yes absolutely — it's one of the site's most striking discoveries. The __Terrace Houses__ are former Roman dwellings of local elites (2nd-7th centuries) built on the hill opposite the Library of Celsus, sheltered under a modern glass roof to preserve __painted frescoes__ and __floor mosaics__ — among the best preserved in the world. 700 TRY supplement (€22) in addition to site entry (1500 TRY / €45). 1h visit. Photos allowed without flash.
How to get to Ephesus from Istanbul?+
Direct flight __Istanbul (IST or SAW) → Izmir (ADB)__: 1h, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AnadoluJet, €30-100 return, 8-12 flights/day. From Izmir airport, Havaş bus + local bus to Selçuk (2h, €8-12) or private taxi (1h, €60-80). Alternative: direct flight Istanbul → Bodrum (BJV, 1h15) + car to Selçuk (3h, 220 km). To visit Ephesus on a day trip from Istanbul: morning flight 7-8am, Selçuk arrival around 11am, site visit 12-4pm, evening return flight.
Where to stay to visit Ephesus?+
__Selçuk__ is the best base — authentic village 3 km from the site, rich in charming accommodation: __Nilya Hotel__ (boutique hotel, €80-130/night), __Akay Hotel__ (family, €60-100), __Hotel Bella__ (exceptional breakfast, €50-90). Turkish village atmosphere, local restaurants. __Kuşadası__ (20 km, cruise port) offers more animation and beaches but is very touristy and beach-oriented. Avoid __Izmir__ for visiting Ephesus — 80 km drive, significant time loss.

Our verdict

Ephesus is one of the great must-sees of a Turkey trip — an ancient site of exceptional conservation quality and monumental density. Go ideally in April-June or September-October to avoid crushing summer heat. Visit early (opening 8am) to avoid tourist buses arriving at 10am. Imperatively pay the 700 TRY supplement for terrace houses (Yamaç Evler) — the Roman mosaics and frescoes there are among the best preserved in the world. Stay in Selçuk (3 km from the site, charming accommodation at €50-150/night) rather than Kuşadası (touristy and beachy). Plan half a day to a full day for the visit, and combine with the House of the Virgin Mary (7 km), Basilica of St John (Selçuk), Temple of Artemis (Selçuk) and ideally Pamukkale (200 km, 3h drive) for a complete 3-4 day cultural stay on the Aegean Coast.
