Frequently asked questions

Which Bodrum neighbourhood to choose?+
Depends on your style. __Yalıkavak__: the most chic, luxury marina (Bodrum's 'Saint-Tropez'), superyachts, gastronomic restaurants, high-end boutique hotels (Macakizi, Maxx Royal Bodrum at €400-1500/night). __Türkbükü__: chic and trendy beach clubs (Maçakızı, Sun Sandal Beach), lounge atmosphere. __Bitez__: family, long 2 km sandy beach, accessible hotels €80-200/night. __Gümüşlük__: authentic, bohemian, fish restaurants on stilts (Limon, Mimoza) — our favourite for sunset. __Gümbet__: young, intense nightlife (Halikarnas Disco clubs). __Bodrum-centre__: lively port, restaurants, castle, Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
How to get to Bodrum from Paris?+
__Direct flights in summer__ (May-October) from Paris CDG/ORY to __Bodrum Milas (BJV)__: 3h45, Sun Express, Corendon, Pegasus, €250-500 return. Airport 35 km from Bodrum-centre — Havaş bus 45 min (€8), free resort shuttle, taxi €50-70. Off-season, flights via Istanbul (1h15 stopover). For Yalıkavak/Türkbükü: private transfer recommended from BJV (€45-60, 45 min).
What is a gulet cruise?+
The __gulet__ is a traditional wooden caïque 15-30 m long, with 2 masts, 4-12 double cabins, captain + cook + sometimes steward. Departing from Bodrum, 4 to 8 day cruises coasting along the turquoise coast to __Datça__ (wild peninsula), __Fethiye__ (Ölüdeniz, Saklıkent) or __Marmaris__. Swimming in otherwise inaccessible coves, stops in fishing ports, fresh meals from the cook (fish, mezze). Rates €400-1500/person/week half-board depending on boat level (economy to high-end). Season April-October. Booking 1-2 months ahead.
Should you visit the Museum of Underwater Archaeology?+
Yes absolutely — it's one of the __world's best underwater archaeology museums__, housed in the Castle of Saint Peter built in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John. Centrepiece: remains of the __Uluburun shipwreck__ (14th century BC, Phoenician ship loaded with gold, copper, tin, glass, ebony, ivory) — one of the oldest shipwrecks explored by underwater archaeology. Other collections: ancient glass, amphorae, jewellery from Byzantine wrecks. The castle itself merits the visit (4 towers, chapel, panoramic port view). Entry 320 TRY (€10), 2-3h visit. Go early morning (opening 8:30am) to avoid heat and crowds.
Where are the remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus?+
The remains of the __Mausoleum of Halicarnassus__ (one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, tomb of King Mausolus, 4th century BC, 45 m high originally) are 800 m from the Castle of Saint Peter, in central Bodrum. The site is today reduced to a few foundations, capitals and fragments — most of the marbles were looted in the 15th century by the Knights of Saint John to build the castle; the best preserved sculpted friezes are at the __British Museum in London__. Short visit (30-45 min) to complete with photos of the castle containing its recycled marbles. Entry 200 TRY (€6). For classical archaeology enthusiasts only.

Our verdict

Bodrum is Turkey's major chic beach destination — the 'Turkish Saint-Tropez' combining peninsula beaches, intense nightlife, international-class gastronomy and major ancient heritage (Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Castle of Saint Peter). One week is ideal to explore the peninsula. Avoid July-August if seeking calm and reasonable prices — prefer May-June or September-October to combine warm sea (22-26°C), manageable crowds and reduced rates (-30 to -50% vs July-August). Choose your base according to your style: Yalıkavak for luxury and superyachts, Türkbükü for trendy beach clubs, Gümüşlük for authenticity, Bitez for families, Bodrum-centre for the port and nightlife. And treat yourself to at least one day on a gulet cruise — the signature nautical experience of the Turquoise Coast.
