Ngorongoro

Things to do — Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro is organised around one main activity (the crater descent) and several complementary experiences.

Descending into the crater is the headline experience that justifies the trip on its own. The main road (Lerai descent road) opens at 6:30 am — be among the first to enjoy 2 hours of calm before groups arrive. The descent is spectacular: 600 metres of drop in 8 km of switchback road, plunging views over the crater plain, first herds observed from the track. At the bottom, count on 6-8 hours of game drive with picnic around noon at Hippo Pool or Lerai forest. Ascent via the eastern road (Lemala ascent road) at the end of the day — each vehicle must be out of the crater before 6 pm (strict timing).

Guaranteed observations: elephants (old solitary males with sometimes spectacular tusks), buffalo (herds of 50-100 individuals), hippos (at Hippo Pool, one of the largest concentrations in East Africa), wildebeest, zebras, gazelles (permanent residents, 15,000-20,000 individuals), spotted hyenas (one of the world's largest populations, frequent hunting scenes), lions (60-80 individuals, 4 main prides). Black rhinos (25-35 individuals in 2024) are harder but often spotted at distance — one of the only places in the world where observation is probable.

Hiking in the highlands around the crater offers an active alternative if you spend 2 nights on the rim. The ascent of Empakaai crater (3-4h round trip from the entrance, Maasai guide mandatory) opens onto a panoramic view of a much smaller secondary crater (6 km diameter) sheltering a pink soda lake fed by hydrothermal springs — often populated by pink flamingos in season. The descent into Olmoti crater (2h round trip) is more accessible, with a waterfall at the bottom and possible buffalo sightings. The ascent of Mount Lemakarot (3,132 m, full day) offers the most beautiful panoramic view of the whole region (crater + Serengeti).
