Things to do — Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam offers a diversity of urban, cultural and beach experiences over 1-2 days.

The Kivukoni fish market (waterfront behind the port, open every day except Friday morning) is the headline experience. Visit recommended between 5:30 and 7:30 am. The fish hall sees 50-80 tons of fish daily. Vibrant atmosphere, colourful cries in fast Swahili, negotiations between fishermen, transporters and restaurateurs. A local guide (10-15 USD for 1-2 hours) decodes the activity and facilitates photos.

The National Museum of Tanzania (Shaaban Robert Street, downtown) is the other essential. The museum presents notably the hominid fossils discovered in Olduvai Gorge — Zinjanthropus boisei (Australopithecus boisei, 1.75 million years), Homo habilis, and numerous stone tools from the Oldowan industry. 5 USD/person, open 9:30 am-6 pm, count 1-2 hours.

The Mwenge village (10 km north of downtown, accessible by taxi 5-7 USD) is the artisanal centre of Dar and the best place in Tanzania to buy authentic Makonde crafts. The Makonde are globally recognised for their black ebony sculptures (mpingo) — the densest and hardest African tree. Traditional motifs: ujamaa (tree of life representing family unity), shetani (stylised spirits with tortured and fantastic forms), ceremonial masks, totemic animals.

The excursion to Bongoyo Island (Msasani peninsula, departure from Slipway, 30 min by dhow) is the perfect antidote to urban heat. Small island offshore, crystal-clear turquoise water, fine white sand, possible snorkelling on the coral reef (visibility 8-15 m), small restaurant for barbecue seafood lunch. Day excursion 7 am-3 pm, 50-80 USD/person with lunch included.
