The best periods

The best time to visit Ngorongoro is Year-round — accessible 365 days/year, optimum June-October and January-February. The most recommended months are Octobre.

Mar, Avr, Mai

Grandes pluies — basse saison

Frequently asked questions

How long to spend at Ngorongoro?+
Ideally spend __2 nights on the rim__ to allow a full day on the crater floor. With just one night, you're forced into a rushed morning descent before departing for the Serengeti in the afternoon. With 2 nights, you can devote a full day to the crater (descent 6:30 am, full day, ascent 5:30 pm) then a half-day at the Empakaai or Olmoti crater nearby, or a Maasai cultural visit. Beyond 2 nights, you switch to other experiences (highland hiking, Empakaai trek).
How to avoid the crowd in the crater?+
Three main tips. __Descend very early__: the access road opens at 6:30 am, be among the first — you'll have 2 hours of calm before groups arrive around 9. __Spend 2 nights on the rim__: you avoid the pressure of chaining Ngorongoro + Serengeti in a single day. __Choose a lodge on the western or south-western rim__ (Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Sopa Lodge) rather than the main southern rim (Serena, Wildlife) which is more saturated. In low season (April-May, November), affluence is lower. Vehicles are also limited to 8h in the crater, which maintains reasonable density even in high season.
How much does a crater descent cost?+
Total cost breaks down as follows: __conservation area entry fees__ 70.80 USD/day/person (including VAT), __crater service fee__ 295 USD per vehicle (regardless of passenger count, making sharing among 6 economical), __4x4 + driver rental__ 80-150 USD/day if not included in the lodge. For 2 people in a lodge with 4x4 and driver provided, count around __300-400 USD/person__ for a crater day, excluding accommodation. With rim accommodation, full Ngorongoro day = 600-1,500 USD/person depending on lodge range.
Do you really see the Big Five in the crater?+
Four of the Big Five are nearly guaranteed: __lion__ (50-70 residents), __elephant__ (solitary males, almost always visible), __buffalo__ (large herds), __black rhino__ (25-35 individuals, rare but often spotted once a day). The __leopard__ is the hardest to see at Ngorongoro — it's present in the rim forests and rarely descends to the floor, unlike the Serengeti where it's easier. For the guaranteed 'Big Five day', you ideally need crater + a morning drive on the rim forest (where the leopard lives). In any case, you'll almost systematically have the 4 others in a single descent.
What are the best lodges on the rim?+
Three categories. __Absolute luxury__: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (&Beyond, 30 sumptuous suites in baroque Maasai cabin design, one of Africa's most iconic hotels), The Highlands (Asilia, 8 wooden domes on the western rim, striking contemporary design). __Premium standard__: Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp (12 tents in the forest 4 km from the rim), Ngorongoro Crater Camp (Sanctuary Retreats, 10 contemporary tents). __Very good mid-range__: Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge (75 rooms, mythic plunging view, the value-for-money pick), Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge (97 rooms, south-east rim, less crowded). __Budget__: Rhino Lodge (simple camp, southern rim), Olduvai Camp (mobile camp in the buffer zone).
Is Ngorongoro suitable for children?+
Yes, probably the best Tanzanian park for children. Several advantages: __short day__ (crater descent = single day), __guaranteed wildlife observation__ (children don't tolerate drives without results), __cool temperatures__ (not the stifling heat of Tarangire), __impressive geological setting__ (children understand the volcano dimension). Most lodges accept children from age 6. For younger ones (4-6), Sopa and Serena are the most suitable. Avoid traveling with children under 4: altitude (2,200 m), discomfort of long trips to/from the crater.
Can you hike around Ngorongoro?+
Yes, several options outside the main crater (which is strictly reserved for 4x4 for safety reasons). __Hiking in the highlands__ around the crater is permitted with a local guide and a Maasai ranger: ascent of the __Empakaai crater__ (3-4h round trip, panoramic view of the soda lake and flamingos), descent into the __Olmoti crater__ (2h round trip, waterfall at the bottom), ascent of __Mount Lemakarot__ (3,132 m, full day, 360° view over the crater and Serengeti). These outings are organised from rim lodges (50-100 USD/person) and offer a complementary active dimension to the classic game drive.

Our verdict

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most extraordinary natural sites and a must-stop on the Tanzanian Northern Circuit. Its globally unique animal density (25,000 mammals on 260 km²), the possibility of observing the Big Five in a single day, and its exceptional geological setting (19 km diameter caldera, 600 m deep) make it an unforgettable experience despite the crowds and cost. Our advice: imperatively spend 2 nights on the rim rather than just one (which allows a full day in the crater floor rather than a rushed morning), descend at opening (6:30 am) to avoid groups, and combine with the Serengeti and Tarangire for the complete Northern Circuit. Ngorongoro is also one of the only places where black rhino observation is near-guaranteed — another reason to make it a priority.
