South Coast

When to go — South Coast

The South Coast follows the south-west monsoon climate, with a well-marked dry season from November to April and an intense wet season from May to October. It is probably the region of Sri Lanka where the difference between high and low season is the most radical in terms of practicality.

December, January, February and March are the absolutely optimal months to visit the South Coast. Skies are clear, the sea turquoise and calm, temperatures perfect (26-30 °C by day, 22-25 °C by night), humidity reasonable. It is the peak blue whale season at Mirissa, the ideal time for scuba diving (25-30 metres visibility), surfing at Hikkaduwa and Weligama, and exploring Galle Fort without rain. Book accommodation 2 to 3 months in advance for Christmas/New Year and February-March.

April marks the end of the high season. Conditions remain excellent for swimming and whales (still present until mid-April), but the first pre-monsoon showers appear at the end of the month and the heat intensifies (32 °C). The Sinhalese and Tamil New Year in mid-April brings the villages to life with processions, dances and offerings — culturally interesting moment.

May marks the brutal arrival of the south-west monsoon (Yala monsoon), which lasts from May to late September. Rain is frequent and sustained, the sea becomes dangerous, whale trips are suspended, many hotels close for renovation. A period to avoid except in special cases (committed surfing on reef breaks, extreme budget, business travel).

October and November correspond to the inter-monsoon, a transitional period with still-frequent showers but longer clear spells. The sea gradually becomes swimmable again from mid-November, and the tourist season slowly picks up. Whale trips restart in mid-December. A good period for flexible travellers seeking to avoid the high season without suffering the worst of the monsoon.
