South Coast

Getting around — South Coast

The South Coast is best explored by coastal train (the most picturesque), private car with driver (the most comfortable) or tuk-tuk (for short distances). Express buses exist but are less recommended for international travellers.

The coastal train from Colombo Fort to Matara (and beyond to Kataragama since 2019) hugs the coast for most of its route — one of the most beautiful railway journeys in South Asia, with the track sometimes approaching within 5 metres of the waves. Main stations: Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa (Polkanda station), Matara. Very low fares: USD 1-3 by class. No reservation possible (except first class on certain trains), arrive 30 minutes early. Trains every 1-2 hours during the day.

The Southern Expressway (E01) connects Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) and Colombo to Galle in 1h45 and to Matara in 2h15. It is the fastest option to reach the South Coast from Colombo. Toll around USD 10 for a private vehicle.

The car with driver-guide remains the most practical option for exploring the coast with several stops (Galle-Mirissa-Tangalle-Yala). Budget USD 50 to 70 per day all-inclusive. The main roads (A2 Galle Road, E01 expressway) are in good condition, traffic is only dense approaching Colombo and Galle.

Tuk-tuks are the ideal solution for short distances: Mirissa-Weligama (10 min, USD 5), Galle Fort-Unawatuna beach (15 min, USD 6), Tangalle centre-Goyambokka (10 min, USD 4). Download PickMe or Uber for metered rides without negotiation.

Scooters and motorbikes: scooter hire (USD 15-20/day) is very popular on the South Coast for exploring freely. International licence mandatory and helmet essential. Beware of erratic traffic and prefer secondary roads.
