The East Coast follows a climate regime in perfect opposition to the south-west coast. It is affected by the north-east monsoon (Maha monsoon) blowing from October to March, against the south-west monsoon that affects the rest of the island from May to September. This particularity makes the East Coast a precious beach alternative in peak low season of the south-west.
May, June, July and August are the optimal months to visit the East Coast. Skies are clear, the sea turquoise and calm at Trincomalee and Pigeon Island, waves consistent at Arugam Bay (which sees the international surf community flock in). Hot temperatures (30-34 °C) but dry, with a welcome sea breeze morning and evening. Peak tourist season on the east coast, but crowds remain much smaller than at Mirissa or Galle on the south coast. Good-quality accommodation should be booked 1-2 months in advance at Arugam Bay (Surf Resort, Hideaway, Stardust Beach) and Trincomalee (Trinco Blu, Jungle Beach).
September marks the gradual end of the dry season. Waves begin to lose consistency at Arugam Bay towards late September, but conditions remain excellent for swimming and snorkelling at Pigeon Island. Good period for travellers seeking more accessible prices and dropping crowds.
October is the inter-monsoon: conditions still correct at the start of the month but gradual arrival of the first north-east monsoon rains. Surf season totally over at Arugam Bay (most schools close mid-October). Transitional period to prefer for tight budgets that tolerate occasional rain.
November, December, January, February and March correspond to the north-east monsoon. Rain frequent and sometimes sustained, sea rough and dangerous, Pigeon Island boat trips cancelled most of the time, many establishments dormant. To be strictly avoided for a beach trip. For travellers coming in the high season of the south-west coast (December-March), stay south and forget the East Coast.
April marks the transition to the new high season. Rains fade, the sea calms gradually, the first scout surfers arrive at Arugam Bay. Good pre-season period for flexible travellers, on condition of accepting still-variable conditions.
