The Colombo region and the West Coast offers a range of activities combining urban exploration, cultural experiences and beach relaxation.
In Colombo, the must-see is the Galle Face Green esplanade at sunset — 500 metres of seafront lawn where, every evening, tens of thousands of inhabitants come to cool off, eat street food (isso wade, pol roti) and fly kites. Next door, the Galle Face Hotel (1864) serves a colonial tea time on its ocean-facing terraces — an iconic Colombo experience. In the morning, mandatory exploration of Pettah, the most fascinating traditional bazaar in South Asia: streets specialised in spices (the famous Pettah Floating Market), fabrics, electronics, jewellery, Jami Ul-Alfar mosque (red and white striped, photographic), Old Dutch Hospital (restored colonial shopping centre with restaurants and craft shops). In the afternoon, visit the Gangaramaya Buddhist temple (one of Colombo's largest, a surprising mix of architectures), the Independence Memorial Hall and the National Museum (Sinhalese heritage from origins to today, USD 5). For shopping, Independence Arcade and Park Street Mews offer a modern experience, while House of Fashions is the local sales must-go.
In Negombo, the flagship attraction is the visit of the morning fish market (5.30-7.30 a.m., free) where the night's catches arrive in a millennial choreography — sensorially strong, fascinating for photographers. Unmissable excursion: the boat ride on the lagoon and Dutch canal (2-3h, USD 25-35), to observe traditional oruwas, fishing villages, mangroves and waterside local life. Also visit St Mary's Church (19th-century neo-Gothic cathedral), testament to Negombo's strong Catholic identity inherited from the Portuguese.
In Bentota, the flagship activity is the Bentota Ganga cruise (2h, USD 20-30), crossing lagoons, mangroves and waterways populated by monitor lizards, birds and crocodiles. Architecture lovers will not miss the Lunuganga estate, the private property of the great architect Geoffrey Bawa transformed into a museum and guesthouse — one of the most beautiful landscape gardens in tropical Asia (visit USD 35). Water sports (jet-ski, banana boat, parasailing, kayak) are available directly from the beach. High-end resorts (Heritance Ahungalla, The Wallawwa, Saman Villas) offer all-inclusive or romantic stays with spa and gastronomic dining.
For those combining Colombo with a safari, Yala National Park (4h30 south-east, USD 60-80 for a shared safari) is one of the best spots in the world to observe wild leopards. Several luxurious lodges at the edge (Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Chena Huts, Yala by Cinnamon) allow a high-end safari experience.
