Getting around — West Coast

The Colombo region and the West Coast is the best-served zone of Sri Lanka, thanks to Bandaranaike International Airport, the Southern Expressway (E01) and the coastal railway line to the south.

From Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) at Katunayake, several options to reach Colombo (30 km, 1h-1h30 depending on traffic): private taxi at official meter (USD 25-35, payable at the counter before exit); Uber/PickMe (USD 15-25, generally available but expect 10-15 minutes wait); Aerobus express to Colombo Fort (USD 4, 1h, departure every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., economical option but often saturated). For Negombo (7 km from the airport), tuk-tuk USD 5-8 or taxi USD 15.

In Colombo itself, the most efficient transports are Uber and PickMe (cars and metered tuk-tuks). PickMe is the local app, often cheaper than Uber, to prefer. A city ride costs USD 2-5. Traditional tuk-tuks without meter are less recommended (mandatory negotiation, inflated prices for foreigners). The urban bus network exists but is difficult to read for foreign visitors. Avoid personal car in the centre, traffic is dense and parking difficult.

The coastal railway line from Colombo Fort serves the entire West Coast and South Coast: Mount Lavinia (20 min), Wadduwa (1h), Bentota (1h30), Hikkaduwa (2h), Galle (2h30), Matara (3h30). Fare USD 1-3 by class, train every 1-2 hours during the day. It is one of the most beautiful coastal lines in Asia, with the track literally hugging the beach on certain sections.

The Southern Expressway (E01) allows quick access to Bentota (1h from Colombo), Galle (1h45) and Matara (2h15). Toll around USD 10 for a private vehicle. It is the fastest option in a private car. No direct access from the airport, you must go through Colombo or join the highway at Kottawa.

To explore the West Coast from Colombo, the most practical solution is a private car with driver for the day (USD 50-70), allowing to combine Bentota, Geoffrey Bawa's Lunuganga estate, and a return in the evening. Intercity buses exist but are uncomfortable for foreign visitors.
