Tenerife

The Teide volcano towering above the Atlantic, UNESCO-listed primeval laurel forests, resident whale and dolphin watching all year long — and an eternal spring four hours' flying time from northern Europe.

4.70Îles Canaries

Tenerife is the largest and most diverse of the Canary Islands — and probably the most complete volcanic destination in Europe. The island divides into two worlds separated by the Teide (3,718 m): the green, humid north, covered in laurel forests and endemic Canarian pines; the dry, sun-drenched south, home to resorts and dark sand beaches.

The Teide is the central character. The third largest volcano on the planet measured from its oceanic base, it is visible from the entire island and, on clear days, from neighbouring islands. Its national park (UNESCO, 2007) is Spain's most visited natural site and one of the ten most visited in the world. The cable car climbs to 3,555 m in minutes, but it's the ascent on foot from Refugio Altavista — timing the summit for sunrise above a sea of clouds — that remains the most extraordinary experience Tenerife can offer.

The north of the island reveals a preserved and historic Tenerife. La Laguna (San Cristóbal de La Laguna), the former colonial capital listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a jewel of 15th-16th century Hispano-American architecture, with cobbled streets, convents and a university founded in 1792. The Anaga Rural Park, in the north-east, is a massif of thousand-year-old laurel forests — Tertiary-era relic vegetation listed as a biosphere reserve, crossed by vertiginous paths overlooking the Atlantic. The village of Masca, clinging to a cliff at 650 m in the Teno massif, is one of the most spectacular villages in the entire archipelago.

In the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera live resident pods of common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and sperm whales — present all year round. It is one of the world's finest cetacean watching destinations.

What we love

  • Teide cable car and summit ascent (3,718 m) — the highest point in Spain
  • Anaga laurel forests listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve
  • Resident whale and dolphin watching all year from Los Cristianos
  • La Laguna (UNESCO) — one of Europe's best-preserved colonial cities
  • Permanent spring climate: 19-29 °C depending on the season, sea at 19-23 °C year-round

What to know

  • Southern resort zones (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) are heavily overdeveloped
  • Teide summit permit must be booked several weeks in advance — fills up quickly
  • Calima (Saharan sand haze) possible in summer, reducing visibility across the island

Frequently asked questions

How many days should I plan for Tenerife?+
A minimum of 5 to 7 days to see Tenerife properly. Two days covers the south essentials (beaches, whale watching trip). The Teide deserves a full day, with an overnight at Refugio Altavista if you're planning a summit sunrise. La Laguna and the northern villages need 2 days. The Anaga can be hiked in 1-2 days. With 10 days, you can combine Tenerife with a day trip or overnight to La Gomera by ferry from Los Cristianos.
How do I get the Teide summit permit?+
Access to the Teide crater (3,555 m to 3,718 m) is regulated by a free permit, booked online at reservas.parquesnacionales.es. Slots are limited to 200 people per day and fill up weeks ahead in high season. Book as early as possible. The cable car (Teleférico del Teide) to 3,555 m does not require a permit but online booking is strongly recommended — it regularly sells out.
What is the best whale watching trip in Tenerife?+
The most reputable departures leave from __Los Cristianos__ and the Caleta marina. Choose operators who follow the cetacean protection charter (minimum distances, engines cut on approach). Long-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are the most frequently seen resident species. Sperm whales are most common in winter and spring. Opt for 3-4 hour trips rather than one-hour excursions that approach too closely and disturb the animals.
North or south Tenerife — where should I base myself?+
The __south__ (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje) guarantees the most sunshine, organised beaches and full tourist infrastructure — ideal for families and beach lovers. The __north__ (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, La Laguna) offers a more authentic Tenerife, greener and cooler, with direct access to the Anaga forests and local culture. Puerto de la Cruz is charming but can be overcast in winter. The best compromise is often to stay in the south and rent a car to explore the north on day trips.
Is the Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnival worth attending?+
Absolutely — and it's seriously underrated internationally. Santa Cruz carnival is officially one of the world's three largest alongside Rio and Venice, with elaborate float parades, extravagant costumes and an atmosphere that takes over the entire city for 10 days spanning February-March. The Queen of the Carnival election and the Grand Parade are the highlights. Book accommodation 3-4 months ahead for this period.

Our verdict

Tenerife is the Canary Islands' most complete destination — as long as you resist the pull of the southern resort strip. The classic mistake is spending an entire holiday in Playa de las Américas without ever climbing the Teide, visiting La Laguna or walking the Anaga forests. Come in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) for the best weather-crowd ratio. Rent a car on arrival — without one, you'll only see half the island.
