Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need to visit Seville?+
Two to three days for the must-sees: cathedral and Giralda (half a day), Alcázar and its gardens (half a day), Plaza de España and the María Luisa park (half a day), Triana and evening tapas (evening). In four to five days, add Italica (Roman site, 9 km away), the Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropol Parasol (Las Setas) and a day trip to Jerez de la Frontera for the sherry bodegas.
How do I book the Seville Alcázar?+
Online booking is strongly recommended, especially from April to October. Tickets are available at alcazarsevilla.org. Arrive at opening time (9:30 am) to avoid queues. The Alcázar is occasionally closed for official state events — check the calendar before your trip. A guided tour (€5-8 supplement) is worthwhile for understanding the Mudéjar architecture and the history of the Catholic monarchs.
Which neighbourhood should I stay in?+
The __historic centre__ (Santa Cruz, Arenal) is convenient for walking everywhere but noisy and expensive. __El Arenal__, between the cathedral and the Guadalquivir, is the most central. The __Alameda de Hércules__ (lively neighbourhood, local bars and restaurants) is excellent for travellers who want authentic Seville. __Triana__, across the Guadalquivir, offers a genuinely local atmosphere and makes a great base for the evening.
Is Holy Week in Seville really worth attending?+
Yes — without hesitation. Seville's Holy Week is listed as a Festival of International Tourist Interest and is the most emotionally powerful event in the Spanish Catholic calendar. The nocturnal processions of the brotherhoods (cofradías), with their thousands of candles, musicians and hooded penitents bearing sculpted floats (pasos), create a medieval atmosphere of rare intensity. Book accommodation four to six months ahead — prices can triple.
Where can I find authentic flamenco in Seville?+
Professional __tablaos__ offer high-quality shows: Casa de la Guitarra (intimate, no minimum spend), El Palacio Andaluz (grand spectacle), La Carbonería (bar with improvised free flamenco some evenings). For a more authentic experience, the __peñas flamencas__ (neighbourhood flamenco clubs) hold evenings for connoisseurs — ask the tourist office for the current schedule. Triana is the most traditional quarter for Sevillian flamenco.
What are the best tapas to try in Seville?+
__Salmorejo__ (cold tomato and bread velouté, topped with hard egg and cured ham) is the local star — thicker and richer than gazpacho. __Pringá__ (braised meat scraps from cocido, spread on bread) is a classic bar snack. __Pavías de bacalao__ (salt cod fritters) and __gambas al ajillo__ (prawns in garlic oil) appear in every good bar. The best tapas are found in bars around the __Alameda de Hércules__, __Calle Betis__ (Triana) and the __Triana market__.
Can I easily visit Granada or Córdoba as day trips from Seville?+
Yes. Córdoba is 45 minutes by AVE high-speed train from Santa Justa station — a very doable day trip. Granada is 3h30 by Alsa coach or about 2h45 by car. Jerez de la Frontera (sherry capital) is 1 hour by train. By car, the Seville-Ronda-Granada-Córdoba circuit is one of Andalusia's finest drives over five to seven days.
What is Italica and is it worth visiting?+
__Italica__ is one of the first Roman cities founded on the Iberian peninsula, just 9 km from Seville. It was the birthplace of emperors Trajan and Hadrian. The amphitheatre (the third largest in the Roman Empire, capacity 25,000), the mosaic floors of the Casa de los Pájaros and the forum ruins justify half a day. The site is little-known by tourists and can be visited in welcome tranquillity. Access by bus from Plaza de Armas station (40 min).

Our verdict

Seville is one of the most complete and captivating cities in southern Europe — as long as you avoid midsummer. The combination of exceptional monumental heritage (three UNESCO sites in the historic centre), some of Spain's finest street food and a rare cultural intensity makes it a first-rank destination. Come in spring or autumn, book a flamenco tablao, cross the Guadalquivir to dine in Triana and rise early for the Alcázar before the groups arrive — Seville rewards the effort.
