The north-east side of Saint Martin enjoys a particularly windy tropical climate thanks to its Atlantic orientation — hence the attraction for water sports year-round.
The dry season (December to April) is the ideal period: temperatures 24-29 °C, sea at 26-27 °C, maximum sunshine (8-9 h/day), constant trade winds at 20-25 knots (perfect kitesurfing), no sargassum. It's also the peak tourist season — Orient Bay very busy mid-day, Anse Marcel hotels to book 4-6 months ahead.
May-June make an excellent shoulder season: weather still very favourable, smaller crowds, Orient Bay beach nearly deserted on weekdays, prices down 30-40 %. Excursions to Pinel and Tintamarre without booking.
The wet season (July to November) brings three specific disadvantages to this area: (1) sargassum (brown algae) affecting Orient Bay and Le Galion from May to October with a peak in July-August — a recurring problem since 2011, managed by municipalities but which can spoil some days; (2) major hurricane risk in August-October (Irma 2017); (3) more frequent tropical rains. Many hotels and restaurants close 2-3 months (September to mid-October). Prices are lowest but the risk is real.
