North-East SXM

Getting around — North-East SXM

The north-east side can be crossed by car in 15-20 minutes from south (Le Galion) to north (Anse Marcel). A car is essential — little public transport, moderate distances but no pedestrian connections.

The rental agencies are at SXM airport (Dutch side) — €40-65/day for a compact, 2-3 months advance booking in high season. Roads to French standards (right side). The D29 runs along the east coast from Marigot to Anse Marcel via Mont Vernon and Orient Bay. The D30 leads to Cul-de-Sac (Pinel shuttle). The D24 serves Anse Marcel and the north point.

Travel times from SXM: Orient Bay 30 min, Le Galion 28 min, Cul-de-Sac (Pinel shuttle) 35 min, Anse Marcel 40 min, Mont Vernon 25 min. Between sites on the north-east side: Orient Bay-Anse Marcel 15 min, Orient Bay-Le Galion 5 min, Orient Bay-Cul-de-Sac 5 min, Anse Marcel-Marigot 15 min.

Orient Bay parking is saturated between 10 am and 4 pm in high season. Several car parks (a large main car park to the south, smaller ones along the Coralita road). Avoid midday (prefer before 10 am or after 4 pm). Free parking. At Anse Marcel, free parking at the marina entrance. At Cul-de-Sac, parking for the Pinel shuttle at €5 per day.

The taxis are available at Orient Bay (in front of the main lolos) — €25-35 to SXM, €15-20 to Marigot. No reliable public transport. Some buses on the Dutch side connect Philipsburg, but not recommended for tourists.
