Marigot Grand-Case

The French side of the island: the Creole capital Marigot with blue-and-white houses and yacht harbour, Grand-Case, gastronomic capital of the French Antilles, and a string of western beaches (Baie Rouge, Friar's Bay, Happy Bay) with mythical sunsets.

4.50

The French side of Saint Martin covers the northern 53 km² of the island, about 60 % of the territory. It rolls out its landscapes from the heights of Pic Paradis (424 m, the island's highest point) to the most preserved western beaches — all facing the sunset, without the dazzling morning light. This area concentrates the most authentic and refined experiences of a Saint Martin trip: the capital Marigot for Creole culture and shopping, Grand-Case for gastronomy, and a string of western beaches (Baie Nettlé, Baie Rouge, Friar's Bay, Happy Bay) for swimming and relaxation.

Marigot is the French administrative capital, a charming little colonial town with a lively waterfront. Fort Saint-Louis (1789), built at King Louis XVI's request by Governor Jean Sébastien de Durat, dominates the bay from its hill — panoramic view over the bay, Anguilla and the coastal silhouette. The Marina Royale welcomes yachts and sailboats. The Wednesday and Saturday morning market (waterfront) is the traditional gathering for Saint Martiners for exotic fruits, spices and fresh fish. The Saint Martin History and Archaeology Museum traces Amerindian history, colonisation and slavery.

Grand-Case, 15 minutes north of Marigot, is the gastronomic capital of the French Antilles. Its main street (1.5 km along the beach) lines up more than 30 restaurants — from the family Creole lolo to the Michelin-starred restaurant. The sunset over the bay is one of the most beautiful in the Antilles. The Mardis de Grand-Case (January to April) close the street to traffic and bring in artisans and entertainment in the evening.

The western beaches are the other jewel of the French side. Baie Nettlé (golden sand, protected lagoon, hotels), Baie Rouge (white sand, spectacular red cliffs, wilder), Friar's Bay (family-friendly, two famous lolos: Friar's Bay Beach Café and Kali's Beach Bar), Happy Bay (deserted, 15-min walk access from Friar's Bay), Plum Bay (snorkelling, ideal for fish and turtles) and Long Bay (wild, near Terres Basses). Sandy Ground, a narrow sand strip between lagoon and sea, hosts popular restaurants and the marina.

Frequently asked questions

How many days on the French side of Saint Martin?+
Minimum 4-5 days to fully enjoy Marigot, Grand-Case and the western beaches. 4 days: day 1 Marigot (Wednesday/Saturday market, Fort Saint-Louis), day 2 Baie Rouge and Friar's Bay, day 3 Grand-Case (beach in the morning, gastronomy in the evening, Mardis if January-April), day 4 Happy Bay and Plum Bay (snorkelling). With 7 days, add a day at Pic Paradis (hiking), a boat excursion to Anguilla, and a leisure day. Ideally combine with 2-3 days on the north-east side (Orient Bay) for a complete stay.
What's the best beach on the French side?+
Hard to pick a single favourite. Baie Rouge: the most spectacular, white sand, red cliffs, sometimes marked waves, few providers (bring umbrella/water). Friar's Bay: the most family-friendly, calm lagoon, two excellent lolos (Friar's Bay Beach Café, Kali's), easy parking. Happy Bay: the most secret, 15-min walk from Friar's Bay, golden sand, deserted. Baie Nettlé: the most structured, calm lagoon, hotels, restaurants. Plum Bay: best for snorkelling (fish, turtles). For best sunset atmosphere: Baie Rouge or Grand-Case. For absolute calm: Happy Bay.
How to eat in Grand-Case without breaking the bank?+
Grand-Case offers two culinary worlds. The lolos on the port (Talk of the Town, Sky's the Limit, Rosemary's) serve excellent Creole cuisine on charcoal (smoked chicken, ribs, conch, sides) for €15-25/person — queue from 6:30 pm, relaxed atmosphere, tables by the sea. The gastronomic restaurants (Bistrot Caraïbes, Le Pressoir, L'Auberge Gourmande, Sol e Luna) charge €50-90/person without wine, €80-150 on tasting menu — book 1-2 weeks ahead in high season. The Mardis de Grand-Case (January to April) are the chance to combine street food, lolos and artisans in the evening (pedestrian street).
Where to stay on the French side?+
Three distinct zones depending on your style. Grand-Case (for gastronomy and sunset): boutique hotels and rentals facing the bay, €150-400/night for two. Baie Nettlé (for seaside and family): hotels (Anse Margot, Mercure) and lagoon-side residences, €110-250/night. Marigot (for city and shopping): not very charming for a beach stay but practical (Beach Plaza, central hotels), €100-200/night. For luxury: Le Domaine de l'Anse Marcel (north-east) or private villa on Terres Basses (€400-1,200/night for 6-8 people). Avoid Sandy Ground for sleeping (urban, little charm).
Is the Marigot market worth visiting?+
Absolutely — it's one of the most authentic moments of a Saint Martin stay. The market is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings (from about 6 am to 1 pm) on the Marigot waterfront, around Marina Royale. On the stalls: exotic fruits (mangoes, pineapples, passion fruits, sapodillas, soursops), Creole spices, basketry, batik, t-shirts, souvenirs, flowers. Fishermen sell their morning catch (snapper, sea bream, mahi-mahi). Several lolos serve excellent Creole breakfast. Arrive early (before 9 am) for maximum animation and freshness. Parking difficult nearby, park at the free car park behind Marina Royale and walk 3 minutes.
What to do at Fort Saint-Louis?+
Fort Saint-Louis (1789) dominates Marigot bay from its hill. Built at King Louis XVI's request under Governor Jean Sébastien de Durat, its mission was to protect the island from British incursions. Today partly in maintained ruins, it's one of Saint Martin's major historical sites. Free open access, 7 days a week. Count 15-20 minutes walking up from Marigot centre (marked path, partly stairs, bring water and walking shoes). From the top, 360° panoramic view: Marigot bay, Anguilla island to the north, Dutch side silhouette to the south, inland hills. Ideal at sunset but arrive 30 min before nightfall (unlit path).

Our verdict

The French side of Saint Martin is the authentic and refined heart of the island — the ideal base for those who want to combine the Creole culture of Marigot, the exceptional gastronomy of Grand-Case and the quiet of the western beaches (Baie Rouge, Friar's Bay, Happy Bay). Devote a minimum of 4-5 days, alternating beach mornings, excursions to Marigot and other beaches (midday), gastronomic restaurants in the evening in Grand-Case. Base yourself in Grand-Case (for gastronomy), Baie Nettlé (family) or Marigot (capital) depending on your style. It's the area to prioritise for a 7-10 day stay on the French side — ideally combined with 1-2 days at Orient Bay for the east coast.
