"Janvier à Lagos est doux et presque désert. Les falaises de Ponta da Piedade et la vieille ville sont pour vous seul, les prix sont au plancher et la lumière hivernale sur les falaises ocre est superbe."

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Ponta da Piedade from Lagos?+
Ponta da Piedade is 2.5 km south of Lagos old town. By car or taxi: 5 minutes from the centre, paid parking on-site (arrives full in summer by 9am — get there early). On foot: 30-40 minutes from Praça Gil Eanes via Praia da Dona Ana and the cliff paths. By bike: 15 minutes. In summer, several operators run shuttles from the town centre. The kayak excursion departing from Lagos harbour is the most spectacular way to discover the formations from below.
What is the difference between Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo?+
Praia da Dona Ana is larger (around 100 m of sand), more straightforwardly accessible via a well-maintained staircase and has a bar-restaurant in season — it is the busier of the two. Praia do Camilo is smaller, reached only via a long wooden staircase built into the cliff face (around 200 steps), more intimate and often considered the more beautiful for its rock formations. The two beaches are less than a kilometre apart.
Can you surf in Lagos?+
The surf around Lagos suits beginners and intermediate surfers outside winter conditions. Praia da Luz (8 km west), Praia de Porto de Mós and Praia do Camilo offer reasonable conditions from May to October. For experienced surfers, the Vicentine coast (Praia da Arrifana, Praia do Amado) 20-30 km north delivers consistent, quality waves year-round. Several surf schools run lessons from Lagos.
How do you visit Benagil cave from Lagos?+
From Lagos, boat excursions serve the Benagil cave (around 30 km east): allow 3-4 hours with stops at the main beaches and cliffs, around €35-45 per person. These tours generally leave Lagos harbour in the morning. Alternatively, drive directly to Benagil or Carvoeiro and take a shorter local excursion (1.5-2 hours, €20-30). By kayak from Benagil beach (experienced swimmers only), the crossing to the cave takes 15-20 minutes.
Where are the best grilled sardines in Lagos?+
Grilled sardines are at their best from June to September, when the fishing is most active. Look for small restaurants around the Lagos market (Mercado de Lagos), particularly the tasques without laminated tourist menus. Restaurants on the fishing harbour side and the addresses along Rua da Barroca serve fresh sardines at honest prices. Avoid the restaurants on Praça Gil Eanes formatted for tourists — move a block or two away and the quality rises, the prices drop.
Is Lagos suitable for families with children?+
Yes, Lagos is very family-friendly with a few caveats. Praia da Meia Praia, a wide flat sandy beach without cliffs a 10-minute bus ride from the centre, is ideal for children with its calm and shallow water. Boat tours to Ponta da Piedade and the sea caves are suitable for children from around age 5-6 in calm sea conditions. The old town is easily walkable. Avoid the staircase beaches (Dona Ana, Camilo) with pushchairs — the access paths are steep.

Our verdict

Lagos is the best base in the Algarve for travellers who want to combine exceptional natural beauty, authentic town life and direct access to Portugal's most spectacular coastal experiences. Ponta da Piedade at sunrise, a morning in a kayak through the sea caves, lunch at the Lagos market and grilled sardines at the port that evening — a simple programme that captures what makes the western Algarve unique. Come in May-June or September for all of this without August's pressure.
