The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost region and the Iberian Peninsula's most visited coastal destination. Its south coast, running 150 kilometres from the Spanish border in the east to Cape Sagres in the west, is carved from compact limestone that has produced one of the most spectacular coastal landscapes in Europe: ochre and golden cliffs sculpted by the Atlantic, sea caves accessible by swimming or kayak, sandy coves tucked between rock formations and open beaches exposed to the ocean winds.

Lagos, in the western Algarve, is the region's flagship town for travellers seeking authenticity and dramatic scenery: Ponta da Piedade, a complex of limestone cliffs and arches a short walk from the town centre, is one of the most photographed geological formations in Portugal. Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, both walkable from Lagos, regularly appear in lists of Europe's ten finest beaches. Further east, Albufeira concentrates the nightlife and resort atmosphere, while Faro, the regional capital, offers a charming island old town and access to the Ria Formosa, a natural reserve of turquoise lagoon waters protected by a chain of barrier islands.

The region's single most iconic attraction is the Benagil cave (Algar de Benagil), reachable only by sea: a marine cavern of spectacular proportions topped by a natural oculus that sends a column of light down to the interior beach. Boat or kayak excursions from Carvoeiro or Benagil run daily from March to November. At the western tip, Cape Sagres and Cape São Vicente — the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe — offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic and an end-of-the-world atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the summer energy of the beaches.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit the Algarve?+
May-June and September are the ideal months: guaranteed sunshine, sea temperature of 19-22 °C, accessible beaches without August's crowds. Avoid August if you dislike heavy tourism — it is the busiest month on the entire southern coast. Winter (November-March) is mild (12-17 °C) and little wetter than the rest of the year by Portuguese standards, making it ideal for golf and coastal walks.
How do you visit the Benagil cave?+
The Benagil cave is only accessible by sea — it is impossible to reach on foot from the adjacent beach. Options include: boat tour from Carvoeiro, Albufeira or Lagos (1-2 hours, €20-35 per person), kayak rental from Benagil beach (for strong swimmers only — currents can be tricky), or guided stand-up paddle session. In July-August, book the evening before — morning slots fill first.
Is it better to stay in Lagos or Albufeira?+
Lagos is the pick for travellers wanting a balance of authentic town life, exceptional cliff scenery and a calmer atmosphere. Albufeira suits families who prefer a large, busy resort with plenty of facilities and entertainment. For the Praia da Marinha and the central Algarve's finest stretches, Carvoeiro or Lagoa offer a good middle ground.
Do I need a car in the Algarve?+
A car is strongly recommended. While the EN125 connects the main resorts, the finest beaches and coves (Praia da Marinha, Praia do Camilo, Praia da Arrifana) are very difficult to reach by public transport. Lagos, Faro and Albufeira have train connections from Lisbon, but local movement without a car quickly becomes frustrating.
Which is the most beautiful beach in the Algarve?+
Praia da Marinha (Lagoa municipality) is consistently ranked in Europe's top ten for its horseshoe of ochre cliffs and clear water. Praia da Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo in Lagos are spectacular for their cliff settings. Praia de Benagil is small but iconic. For wide open Atlantic beaches: Meia Praia (Lagos) or Manta Rota in the east.

Our verdict

The Algarve is the Iberian Peninsula's most accomplished coastal destination: the diversity of its shoreline, from the Benagil cave to the Sagres cliffs, has no equivalent over the same stretch of European coast. Come in May-June or September for ideal weather, a sea already warm enough to swim and beaches you can actually reach. Base yourself in Lagos for the cliffs, explore Praia da Marinha from Carvoeiro by boat, and end with a sunset at Cape São Vicente — the perfect southern Portugal journey.
