Bora Bora
Bora Bora is the absolute icon of the honeymoon: Mont Otemanu reflected in one of the world's most beautiful lagoons, and the overwater bungalows on the outer reef — the ultimate signature experience of French Polynesia.
Bora Bora (meaning 'firstborn' in Tahitian) is, in the Western collective imagination, the pinnacle of tropical paradise. Located 260 km north-west of Tahiti in the Leeward Islands (Society archipelago), this small volcanic island (29 km², 10,000 inhabitants) has been since the 1970s the absolute icon of global premium honeymoons. And despite its ultra-photographed signature status, Bora Bora preserves a raw beauty that still defies description.
The geography of Bora Bora is unique: a main island 9 km long by 4 km wide, dominated by the twin volcanic peaks of Mont Otemanu (727 m) and Mont Pahia (661 m), ringed by an immense turquoise lagoon of 70 km² — three times the surface of the island itself. This lagoon is protected from the Pacific Ocean by a coral barrier forming a complete crown around the island, studded with motus — white-sand islets, some inhabited by luxury resorts, others deserted and accessible only by water taxi. It is on these outer motus that the iconic resorts with overwater bungalows are located: Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, InterContinental Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa, Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts, Conrad Bora Bora Nui.
The overwater bungalows of Bora Bora are the global signature experience. Built on the outer coral barrier, their feet in 2-3 m of turquoise water, they offer: glass floors revealing the multicoloured fish passing below, private terraces with direct lagoon access (ladder or platform), panoramic view of Mont Otemanu, room service by pirogue. Prices: €1,500 to €2,500/night in high season for premium bungalows (Four Seasons Otemanu Overwater Bungalow, St Regis Royal Overwater Suite), €800-1,200/night for standard bungalows at intermediate resorts.
Activities at Bora Bora revolve around the lagoon. The signature excursion is the lagoon tour by motorised pirogue (€90-150/person, full day): swim with stingrays and blacktip reef sharks on the 'ray bank', snorkelling at the coral garden, picnic on a deserted motu, view of Mont Otemanu from the lagoon's far side. A helicopter overflight of the lagoon (€250-400/person, 20-30 min) offers the most spectacular views in French Polynesia — the photographic investment of a lifetime. Diving enthusiasts will find several interesting sites around Teavanui pass (manta rays, grey reef sharks, turtles), with clubs like TOPdive Bora Bora (€60-90/dive).

Our verdict
Bora Bora delivers on its promise: despite its ultra-touristic destination status, it is one of the world's most beautiful natural landscapes. The turquoise lagoon dominated by Mont Otemanu, the white-sand motus, the overwater bungalows at sunset — these postcard images correspond to a striking visual reality. But Bora Bora is a premium destination accessible only with a certain budget: plan a minimum of 4 nights on site (ideally 5-6) in an overwater bungalow (€1,000-2,500/night depending on resort and season), plus the lagoon tour (€90-150/person) and ideally the helicopter overflight (€250-400/person). It is a lifetime destination: for honeymoon, wedding trip, wedding anniversary. Prioritise the dry season (May to October), book 6 to 9 months in advance and combine Bora Bora with Moorea and Tahiti for a balanced trip.
