Wellington
Wellington is New Zealand's cultural and gastronomic capital — Te Papa Museum (one of the world's best national museums, free), historic 1902 Cable Car, bohemian Cuba Street, Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop, coffee and craft beer scene among the world's best, and gateway to the South Island via the Interislander ferry.
Wellington (Te Whanganui-a-Tara in Māori, 'the great harbour of Tara') is New Zealand's political and cultural capital — 215,000 inhabitants intra-muros, 415,000 in the metro area, at the southern tip of the North Island. Built amphitheatre-like around its deep harbour (an extinct volcano caldera), between steep hills and blue water, it has a unique charm sometimes reminiscent of San Francisco.
It's also statistically the windiest city in the world — average wind speed 27 km/h year-round, frequent gusts 50-80 km/h. The nickname 'Windy Wellington' is serious. Plan a windbreaker year-round.
The Te Papa Museum (Te Papa Tongarewa, 'our place', opened 1998 on the waterfront) is Wellington's #1 attraction and one of the world's best national museums. Free for permanent collections (paid for certain temporary exhibitions NZD 15-25). 6 levels of exceptional exhibits: Māori wing with giant war waka, sculpted contemporary Te Marae marae; natural history with the famous 4.2 m colossal squid; country history; New Zealand and international art; world-class temporary exhibitions. Plan minimum 3-4 h, ideally a full day.
The Wellington Cable Car (historic 1902 funicular, NZD 7 return, 5 min ride) links central Lambton Quay to Kelburn — panoramic view. On arrival: Cable Car Museum (free) then walk down through the Botanic Gardens (free, magnificent Victorian gardens) to Parliament (Beehive) — free guided tour (1 h) — and Old St Paul's (gothic all-wood cathedral, 1866, free).
Wellington's bohemian soul concentrates around Cuba Street — pedestrian street with independent cafes, art galleries, vintage shops, ethnic restaurants, craft beer bars. The kitsch Bucket Fountain is a local meeting point. Wellington is considered one of the world's best coffee cities — the flat white is served everywhere, iconic cafes (Customs Brew Bar, Flight Coffee, Memphis Belle, Mojo) are institutions.
Film fans visit Weta Workshop in Miramar (30 min by bus 24) — guided tours NZD 60-95/person (90 min, special effects workshop for Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Avatar, Tintin).
Wellington has one of the world's best craft beer scenes — over 40 breweries within 50 km. Iconic spots: Garage Project Tap Room, Fork & Brewer, Husk Bar, Little Beer Quarter.
The region around Wellington offers essential day excursions: Martinborough (Pinot Noir vineyards, 1h30 east via panoramic Rimutaka Hill), Cape Palliser (seals and 1897 lighthouse, 2h30), Zealandia (urban ecological sanctuary, wild kiwis observable on night visits NZD 95).
Wellington is also the natural gateway to the South Island: the Interislander ferry to Picton (3h30, €70-100/person foot passenger, €200-400 with car) is one of the world's most beautiful sea crossings.
