South Martinique

Things to do — South Martinique

South Martinique offers a density of activities that easily justifies two weeks of stay. The itinerary is naturally structured around four complementary axes.

Beaches and swimming: this is the heart of the South experience. Les Salines (Sainte-Anne) remain the absolute must-see — arrive before 9am to enjoy tranquillity. Anse Trabaud (25-min walk from Pointe Baham) offers a wilder experience. Le Diamant beach (4 km facing the Rock) is perfect for long sunset walks. The Anses d'Arlet (village) are unmissable for snorkeling with turtles directly from the beach. Grande Anse des Salines and Petite Anse complete the picture of mythical beaches.

Diving, snorkeling, nautical sports: the Caribbean seabeds of the South are among the richest of the island. Diving centres in Le Diamant, Anses d'Arlet and Sainte-Anne offer baptisms (€50-65), explorations (€35-50) and complete PADI training. Catamaran or yacht outings to the white seabeds of François (day with lunch and open bar: €90-130/person) are the signature nautical experience of the South. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are practised at Le Vauclin and Sainte-Anne (Pointe Faula). Live-aboard sailing is easily rented at Le Marin (French boating capital with 800 berths).

Cultural discovery: the South offers several major sites. The Pagerie house in Trois-Îlets, birthplace of Joséphine de Beauharnais (future Empress of the French), offers a carefully crafted museum route. The Savane des Esclaves in Trois-Îlets reconstructs a Creole village and retraces the history of slavery with remarkable pedagogy. Habitation Clément in Le François (gardens, distillery, rum cellars, contemporary art) is one of the most beautiful habitations of the island. The Bourg de Sainte-Anne with its church and shaded square, and the Bourg des Anses d'Arlet with its church facing the sea, are picturesque stops.

AOC rum distilleries: the South houses several emblematic distilleries with free visits and generous tastings. Trois-Rivières (Sainte-Luce) offers a rum cellar visit in a preserved setting. La Mauny (Rivière-Pilote) offers a more industrial but very complete visit. Further east, Habitation Clément (Le François) combines distillery, botanical gardens and contemporary art in an exceptional setting.
