Dead Sea

When to go — Dead Sea

The climate of the Dead Sea is unique in the world — the Great Continental Rift depression creates an extreme microclimate conditioned by negative altitude (-430 m) and the basin effect. Temperatures exceed on average by 5-8 °C those of Amman located 50 km as the crow flies but at 1,000 m altitude. This extreme strongly conditions the choice of period.

October to April: the ideal season. Perfect temperatures for swimming and activities (air 22-32 °C by day, 15-22 °C at night). Dead Sea water at 24-28 °C — pleasant for 15-20 minute baths. The sky is generally clear, star observation from resort terraces is sublime (no light pollution, dry air). Biblical sites (Bethany Beyond the Jordan, Mount Nebo) are accessible comfortably without risk of heatstroke. Desert excursions (Wadi Mujib Siq Trail) are possible in optimal conditions. It's also the thalasso cure season — medical centres operate at full capacity (psoriasis, eczema, rheumatism). Significant crowds during European Easter (mid-April) and All Saints holidays — book 2-3 months in advance.

May: already hot but still bearable. Water at 26-28 °C perfect for prolonged bathing. Crowds reduced after the April peak. Midday heat (32-38 °C) starts to be intense — sun exposure dangerous, constant hydration essential. Desert excursions (Wadi Mujib) become uncomfortable in full day. Biblical sites remain visitable in the morning (before 11 am) and in late afternoon.

June to September: absolutely to be avoided. The Dead Sea is in the hottest basin in the world — air regularly exceeds 40 °C and reaches 42-45 °C in July-August. Oven sensation from exiting the air-conditioned room. Sea water reaches 32-35 °C — warmer than body temperature, brief swims only (unpleasant sensation). Desert excursions (Wadi Mujib) are closed in July-August (safety). Biblical sites near-impossible to visit between 10 am and 5 pm (severe heatstroke risk). Only air-conditioned resorts with infinity pools remain pleasant — alternating air conditioning/pool, brief sea bathing (5-10 min) at the start or end of the day. Hotel rates are sharply down (50-60% reduction compared to April) — opportunity for tight budgets accepting climate constraints.

Some rain episodes may occur in winter (December-February) — rare but sudden, they can compromise 1-2 days of bathing. The sky generally clears quickly after showers. Rain on the Dead Sea is an unusual spectacle — drops bounce off the dense surface without immediately penetrating.
