Dead Sea

Getting around — Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is organised simply — short distance from Amman, single road axis along the east coast, organisation around resorts.

From Amman to the Dead Sea (50 km, 50 min): three options. 1) Private taxi (the most practical, €50-70 for the direct transfer) — booking via your Amman hotel or via Uber/Careem. 2) Private driver for the day (€130-180) if you want to combine with Madaba and Mount Nebo en route (classic itinerary: Amman → Madaba → Mount Nebo → Dead Sea, departure 9 am, resort arrival 3 pm). 3) Car rental (€50-80/day) — Highway 65 then scenic descending road, English signage, easy driving. Public bus is not practical to the Dead Sea (few frequencies, drops far from resorts).

From Queen Alia Airport (AMM): 90 min direct drive to Dead Sea resorts (without going through Amman). Private taxi €60-90. Several resorts offer airport shuttles (included or supplement €40-60). Practical option if you arrive late and want to dive straight into wellness.

From the Dead Sea to Petra (200 km, 2h30): private taxi (€100-150) or resort shuttle. The road descends through Wadi Araba (Jordan Valley) then climbs back up to Petra via Wadi Musa — magnificent scenic route. Alternative: go up to Karak (Crusader fortress, 50 km east, 1h) then descend to Petra (130 km, additional 2h) — for those who want to integrate Karak into the itinerary.

At the Dead Sea: no local transport necessary. Resorts are 2-15 km apart — taxi (€5-15 depending on distance) or hotel shuttles (often free between resorts of the same group). The site of Bethany Beyond the Jordan is 15 min by taxi from the resorts (€10-15), same for the Wadi Mujib Reserve (30 min, €20-30). Resorts generally offer shuttles or organised excursions to these sites (€15-30 per person, transport only, excluding site entries).

To Israel/Palestine: possible via the Allenby Bridge (King Hussein Bridge) 1h north of the Dead Sea. Sensitive border — separate Israel visa required, lengthy formalities (2-3h crossing), not covered by the Jordan Pass. Classic combination: Dead Sea Jordanian side (1-2 nights) → Allenby Bridge crossing → Jerusalem (3-4 nights) → Dead Sea Israeli side (1 night) → return Tel Aviv and return flight.
