Dead Sea

Itineraries — Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is an unmissable stop on a trip to Jordan — a parenthesis of geological wellness and relaxation between the cultural sites of the north (Amman, Madaba, Mount Nebo) and the wonders of the south (Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba). Located just 50 minutes' drive southwest of Amman, on the east bank of the Great Continental Rift, it offers a sensorially unique experience in the world — buoyancy in waters 10 times saltier than the oceans — doubled with one of the finest concentrations of 5-star resorts in the Middle East and major biblical sites (Bethany Beyond the Jordan, UNESCO 2015).

The region stands out for its extraordinary geography: lowest point of emerged Earth at -430 m below sea level, closed sea 10 times saltier than oceans, exceptional climate (dense air, filtered UVs, near-non-existent pollen), tectonic basin of the Great Continental Rift separating the African plate from the Arabian plate. This singularity explains the scientific, therapeutic and tourist interest of the place since Antiquity — pharaohs of Egypt already sent for black mud for their embalming rituals.

The Jordanian coast (50 km of coastline) is dotted with five major 5-star resorts built in the 2000s-2010s, which have made the Dead Sea a wellness tourism destination accessible and recognised. All offer private sea access (public beaches are rare and of mediocre quality), infinity pools with view, high-end spas offering Dead Sea-derived products (mud, scrubs, mineral masks) and quality international and Levantine cuisine. Rates (€200-500/night for 5-star) are among the highest in Jordan, but the experience largely deserves it.

For a short stay (1 night), plan: arrival in early afternoon from Amman (45 min drive), swimming and mud baths, spa treatment, sunset over infinity pools facing the turquoise waters and West Bank hills, gourmet dinner, night in suite with sea view. Next morning: 2nd swim and mud baths, hearty brunch, departure for Petra (2h30) or return to Amman. For 2 nights, add a morning at Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Christ's baptism biblical site, 1h30) and more spa time.

Integration of the Dead Sea into a classic Jordanian itinerary is very simple: from Amman, descend via Madaba and Mount Nebo (cultural morning) then Dead Sea (afternoon and wellness night) then Petra (next day). It's the most practised and most harmonious itinerary — alternation between culture and relaxation.
