The best periods

The best time to visit French Polynesia is May to October (dry season, austral winter).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit French Polynesia?+
Not for French, EU and most Western nationals. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity (COM): French citizens travel there with a valid national ID card, exactly as in mainland France. Other EU citizens can enter with their ID card or passport. For non-Europeans (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, etc.), a passport valid for at least three months after the return date is required, with no visa needed for tourist stays under 90 days. Important note: French Polynesia is NOT in the Schengen area, and a Schengen visa alone does not grant access.
How long is the flight to French Polynesia from Europe?+
Expect at least 22 hours for Paris–Papeete (PPT), via a mandatory stopover in Los Angeles (LAX) for most flights: 11 hours Paris–LAX, a 3-5 hour layover, then 8 hours 30 LAX–Papeete. It is one of the longest air routes in the world. Three main carriers operate: Air France and Air Tahiti Nui via LAX, and French Bee (long-haul low-cost) via San Francisco. Return fares: €1,500-2,500 in low season (May, June, September), €2,500-3,500 in high season (July-August, Christmas). Alternative routings via Tokyo (Air France/Japan Airlines) or Vancouver exist too.
When is the best time to visit French Polynesia?+
The dry season (May to October), corresponding to the austral winter, is by far the better period: ideal temperatures (24-28 °C), low humidity, cooling trade winds, calm lagoons and perfect underwater visibility. It is also the humpback whale season around Moorea and Tahiti (July-October). May, June and September offer the best balance of weather, price and crowds. The wet season (November-April) brings frequent tropical rain, high humidity and a moderate but real cyclone risk, but also significantly lower hotel rates (outside late December).
What budget should I plan for French Polynesia?+
French Polynesia is a premium destination. Plan a minimum of €250-300 per person per day in comfort mode excluding the flight (family pension or 3-star hotel, meals in snacks and food trucks, essential activities). For a signature experience (4-5 star hotel with overwater bungalow, fine dining, private excursions), expect €600-1,200 per person per day. The best Bora Bora resorts (Four Seasons, St Regis, InterContinental Thalasso) hit €1,500-2,500 per night for an overwater bungalow. The Paris–Papeete return flight alone costs €1,500-3,500 per person. Minimum overall budget for 14 days: €5,500-7,000 per person. For a 14-day signature honeymoon: €12,000-25,000 per couple.
What currency is used in French Polynesia?+
The Pacific franc (XPF or CFP), the shared currency of the three French Pacific collectivities (French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna). The exchange rate is fixed and guaranteed by the French state: €1 = 119.33 XPF (1,000 XPF ≈ €8.38). ATMs are common in Papeete and the main islands (Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea), but rare or absent on the smaller Tuamotu atolls and the Marquesas — withdraw cash before heading to remote islands. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in hotels, restaurants and most excursions. American Express is less widely accepted.

Our verdict

French Polynesia is one of the last great dream destinations of the Western imagination that has lost none of its magic. Bora Bora, despite its global icon status, remains one of the most beautiful lagoons ever formed by nature. The Tuamotus deliver divers one of the three most powerful underwater experiences on Earth. The Marquesas preserve a raw cultural and geographical authenticity light-years from mass tourism. The trade-off is clear: a high budget (€250 per day minimum, more often €400-800 for a signature experience), an exhausting 22-hour flight from Europe, and a time difference that takes several days to absorb. For those willing to accept these constraints, French Polynesia reveals itself as one of the great trips of a lifetime. Prioritise the dry season (May to October) for optimal conditions, give yourself at least 14 days on the ground to justify the flight, and combine Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and a Tuamotu atoll to grasp the destination's full range.
