Frequently asked questions

How many nights should I spend in Moorea?+
Minimum 3-4 nights to discover the essence of the island. Ideally 4-6 nights to fully enjoy: 1 arrival day and installation, 1 day island tour by car/scooter (belvedere, Cook and Opunohu bays, marae, Afareaitu waterfall), 1 day snorkelling in the lagoon with rays and lemon sharks, 1 day hiking (Three Coconuts pass or Mont Rotui), 1 day humpback whale watching (July to October) or relaxation on Temae beach, 1 free day according to your wishes.
How do you get from Tahiti to Moorea?+
Two options. Ferry (recommended): Aremiti or Terevau, 30 min crossing from Papeete port to Vaiare port (Moorea), €17-25/person one way, multiple rotations per day from 6 am to 6 pm. Comfortable, air-conditioned, with food service on board. The most practical and economical option, especially with luggage. Plane: Air Tahiti operates several daily flights from Papeete (PPT) to Temae airport (MOZ) on Moorea, 15 min flight, €40-60/person one way. Faster but mainly interesting if you combine Moorea with other islands. On Moorea, hiring a car (€50-80/day) or scooter (€30-50/day) is recommended.
When can you see humpback whales in Moorea?+
The humpback whale (megaptera novaeangliae) observation season runs from July to October, peaking in August-September. The whales come to give birth and nurse their calves in the warm, protected waters of Polynesia after a migration of several thousand kilometres from Antarctica. Several specialised operators based in Moorea (Dr. Michael Poole's Dolphin & Whale Watching Expeditions, Moorea Ocean Adventures, Lagoon Aventure) offer excursions: boat observation (€100-150/person, half day), or supervised in-water swim with the whales (€180-250/person, half day) — strictly regulated. Book several weeks ahead in peak season.
Where to stay in Moorea?+
Several zones and options. North coast (most popular): Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa (5*, only hotel with overwater bungalows on Moorea, €600-1,200/night), Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea (4*, €300-500/night). Temae beach (north-east, the island's most beautiful beach): Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort (5*, €500-900/night). Opunohu Bay: family pensions and intermediate hotels. Economical options: family pensions (Robinson's Cove Villas, Linareva, Pension Te Ora) at €150-300/night. For a honeymoon, choose the Hilton Moorea or Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora.
What to do in Moorea besides the beach?+
Many possible activities. Opunohu belvedere (accessible by car, 240 m altitude, panoramic view of the two bays — essential, ideally at sunrise). Island tour by car/scooter (60 km, 2-3 h without stops). Three Coconuts pass hike (3 h round trip). Mont Rotui ascent (899 m, 5-6 h, demanding). Humpback whale watching (July-October, €100-250/person). 4x4 interior tour (craters, valleys, Victoria pineapples — €60-90/person). Bottle diving (manta rays, turtles, sharks — €60-90/dive). Kayak or paddle in the very calm Cook and Opunohu bays. Pearl farm visit (Champon Pearl Farm) and Victoria pineapple tasting.

Our verdict

Moorea is probably the most complete and most accessible island in French Polynesia. Its dramatic landscapes (Cook and Opunohu bays framed by Mont Rotui), its iconic belvedere, its turquoise lagoon with rays and turtles, its humpback whales from July to October, its spectacular hikes — Moorea offers a diversity of experiences that significantly exceeds Bora Bora. More accessible too: 30 minutes by ferry from Tahiti versus 50 minutes by Air Tahiti flight for Bora Bora, and significantly lower hotel rates (€300-800/night for a good resort versus €1,500-2,500 in Bora Bora). Plan a minimum of 3-4 nights on site, ideally 5-6 to fully enjoy the island. Prioritise the dry season (May to October), particularly July to October for humpback whales.
