Loire Valley

When to go — Loire Valley

The Loire Valley has a degraded oceanic climate: mild and humid to the west, more continental to the east. Average temperatures: 4 °C in January, 20 °C in July. Rain spread across the year (650 mm/year). The ideal seasons are spring and autumn, which combine pleasant climate, active gardens and manageable crowds.

Spring (April-June) is the headline season for gardens: Villandry, Chenonceau, Chaumont (International Garden Festival opens late April). Temperatures are gentle (12-22 °C), days lengthen, vegetation explodes. May-June are the optimal months. Avoid the May long weekends which attract many Europeans to the headline châteaux.

Summer (July-August) is high season: long days, maximum animation, sound and light shows in several châteaux (Chambord, Blois, Loches, Cheverny), festivals (Cellier de Loire in Chambord, Jazz à la Cour in Chenonceau, Sancerre Lyric Evenings). But also maximum crowds (Chambord and Chenonceau exceed 800,000 visitors/year), possible heavy heat (up to 35 °C), hotel prices rising 20-40%.

September is the perfect season: ideal temperatures (16-23 °C), crowds plummeting, harvest in progress in all vineyards. The châteaux regain pleasant accessibility, hotels lower their rates. It's probably the ideal month for the Loire Valley.

Autumn (October-November) is melancholic but beautiful: golden foliage on château parks, late harvests in November, golden light. Rains increase (12-15 days/month). Many châteaux close their gardens at the end of October and switch to reduced hours.

Winter (December-March) is calm and crowd-free. Main châteaux remain open but with limited hours. Christmas markets in Tours, Blois, Saumur. Possibility of private visits at some less-busy châteaux. Avoid: most rural seasonal accommodation and restaurants are closed.
