Île-de-France

Things to do — Île-de-France

In Paris, the headlines are numerous and well-known. The Eiffel Tower (booking essential) remains the icon, ideally visited at sunset for the double effect of panoramic view + hourly light show after dark. The Louvre Museum (booking, €22) demands at least 4 hours to cover the essentials (Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Winged Victory of Samothrace, Italian painting); arriving at opening time (9 am) avoids the worst crowds. The Musée d'Orsay (€16) is the Impressionist counterpart — Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Degas — in a former railway station with spectacular architecture. Notre-Dame de Paris reopens in December 2024 after five years of post-fire restoration; the 12th-century Gothic cathedral once again becomes a must. The Centre Pompidou (€16) houses modern and contemporary art in the iconic building by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers.

For neighbourhoods, the Marais (3rd/4th arrondissements) is probably the most charming: medieval lanes, mansion houses, fashion boutiques, Place des Vosges, Picasso Museum, Carnavalet Museum (Paris history, free). Montmartre (18th) with the Sacré-Cœur, the Place du Tertre and cobbled lanes retains its bohemian atmosphere — visit early morning before the tour buses arrive. Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th) for Parisian elegance: Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots, bookshops, art galleries. The Latin Quarter (5th) for student energy: Panthéon, Jardin des Plantes, Grande Mosquée. The Seine banks between Île Saint-Louis and the Eiffel Tower offer one of the most beautiful urban walks in the world, UNESCO-listed.

Versailles is best discovered over a full day: the royal château (guided tour of the State Apartments), Le Nôtre's gardens (free on weekdays outside fountain shows), the Hameau de la Reine (Marie-Antoinette's rustic village) and the Petit Trianon. Allow €19.50 for château + gardens, €27 for the Passeport (all sites). Arrive at opening (9 am) to avoid mid-morning groups. The Grandes Eaux Musicales (weekend fountain shows) animate the gardens from April to October.

Fontainebleau (1 hour by train from Gare de Lyon, 1.5 hours by car) is a remarkable complement: UNESCO-listed royal château, residence of French kings for eight centuries, far less frequented than Versailles. The château can be visited in 2-3 hours (€14), and the surrounding forest (25,000 ha) ranks among the best bouldering sites in the world — Bois-le-Roi and the Apremont rocks attract climbers from around the globe. Vaux-le-Vicomte, 30 minutes by car, is a 17th-century masterpiece that inspired Versailles; Le Nôtre's French gardens are well worth discovering, and the Candlelight Evenings (Saturdays in summer) remain unforgettable.

Disneyland Paris, 35 minutes from central Paris by RER A, welcomes 9.5 million visitors a year. The main park (Parc Disneyland) reproduces the magical world of Disney films with classic attractions and parades. The second park (Walt Disney Studios) focuses on the behind-the-scenes of cinema. Budget: €56-110/person for a 1-day ticket depending on date and park, plus Disney hotels from €250/night. To combine with a Paris stay for families with young children.

Finally, day trips: Giverny (Monet's gardens, May to October, 1 hour by car), Auvers-sur-Oise (Van Gogh's last landscapes, RER + bus), Chantilly (Condé Museum and racecourse, 25 minutes by train), Provins (UNESCO medieval city, 1.5 hours by train), Senlis (Gothic cathedral and Roman arenas, 1 hour by train).
