Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is France's 3rd region by population and one of the most geographically diverse. It stretches from the volcanic high plateaus of the Massif Central to the snow-capped Alpine summits (Mont Blanc 4,809 m), via the Rhône valley (Lyon) and Alpine piedmonts (Annecy, Grenoble). This diversity translates into 4 major tourist sub-regions with very different identities: Lyon (gastronomy, UNESCO), Alps (mountains, skiing, lakes), Auvergne (volcanoes, thermal baths), Rhône valley (vineyards, Vienne).
For a weekend (3 days), target Lyon alone (gastronomy + UNESCO Vieux Lyon + Croix-Rousse + a starred dinner). With a week (7 days), combine Lyon (2 days) + Annecy (2 days) + Chamonix/Mont Blanc (3 days): a balanced itinerary mixing city, Alpine lake and high mountain. Over 10-14 days, the tour becomes possible: Lyon + Beaujolais + Annecy + Chamonix + an Alpine resort or Auvergne (Puy de Dôme + Sancy).
The key to a successful stay: a car is essential beyond major cities (TGV Lyon, TER Annecy). Book Alpine resorts in winter very early (October for February). For the Alps, choose your season: summer (hiking, lakes) or winter (skiing). Lyon in May-June or September-October for the best conditions.
