Santo Domingo

When to go — Santo Domingo

The optimal window for Santo Domingo is the dry season, November to April. Temperatures are perfect (24-29 °C, refreshing trade winds), humidity reduced (65-75%), sky clear, and walking exploration of the Zona Colonial stays comfortable. It's also high tourist season — book Zona Colonial boutique hotels 2-3 months ahead for December-February.

December-February are the busiest and most expensive months, with strong cruise passenger influx by day (liners call at Santo Domingo from Punta Cana or in Caribbean transit). March-April offer an optimal combination: perfect weather, slightly thinner crowds, reasonable hotel rates. May-June and September-October are shoulder season: rates down 20-30%, reduced crowds, but humidity rising and first tropical storms.

The wet season (May-October) combines intense heat (32-35 °C in July-August), crushing humidity (up to 90%) and frequent late-afternoon tropical storms. Walking visits in the Zona Colonial become wearing mid-day — favour morning (7-11am) and late-afternoon (4-7pm) outings. The hurricane season (June-November, peak in September) is a serious risk — Santo Domingo was hit by Fiona in 2022 (flooding in some neighbourhoods).

A few events to note: Santo Domingo International Jazz Festival (early November, free concerts in the Zona Colonial), Santo Domingo Carnival (February, parades on the Malecón), Bani Mango Festival (May, local cultural atmosphere), Higüey pilgrimage (21 January, national holiday, draws hundreds of thousands of faithful).
