Santo Domingo

Things to do — Santo Domingo

The essence of the Santo Domingo experience concentrates in the Zona Colonial. Typical 2-day itinerary: Day 1Catedral Primada de América (morning, 1h, 60 RD$), then Parque Colón (main square with Christopher Columbus statue), Calle El Conde (pedestrian shopping street), lunch on Plaza España facing the Alcázar de Colón (afternoon, 2h visit including colonial arts museum, 250 RD$). Calle Las Damas in late afternoon (colonial façades of Hostal Nicolás de Ovando, Capilla de los Remedios, Panteón Nacional). Aperitif and dinner on Plaza España. Day 2Fortaleza Ozama (morning, 1h30, 100 RD$, Torre del Homenaje for the view), Museo de las Casas Reales (1h30, 100 RD$, colonial palace). Lunch at Mesón D'Bari. Afternoon: Monasterio de San Francisco (ruins), Iglesia Las Mercedes, Calle Hostos. Evening: merengue-bachata in a Zona Colonial club.

The main museums: Museo del Hombre Dominicano (outside Zona Colonial in Plaza de la Cultura, exceptional pre-Columbian Taíno collection), Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo de Historia Natural, Museo Numismático y Filatélico. The Plaza de la Cultura (1 km north of the Zona Colonial) groups several state museums and the National Theatre.

Excursions from Santo Domingo: Pomier caves (San Cristóbal, 50 km, half day €30-50/person with guide), Boca Chica (beach 30 km away, half-day taxi €25/person), Faro a Colón (15 min by taxi, 100 RD$ entry, interesting for symbolic controversy), Higüey and Altagracia basilica (130 km east, day trip €60-80), Bayahibe and Saona Island (2h drive, day trip €80-100/person, but more practical from Bayahibe directly).

Santo Domingo's nightlife is among the Caribbean's liveliest. Merengue-bachata clubs in the Zona Colonial: Jet Set (the best known, live merengue programming, €15-25 entry), Onno's (Plaza España, lively bar-club), Lulú Tasting Bar (creative cocktail bar). The Malecón (Avenida George Washington) comes alive on weekends — bars, food trucks, popular Dominican atmosphere. The Santo Domingo Casino (Renaissance Jaragua, Hilton, El Embajador) offers an alternative.

Shopping: Mercado Modelo (Calle Mella, crafts, cigars, mamajuana, rum), Larimar Museum & Factory (the national semi-precious stone, turquoise blue, Dominican exclusive), upscale shopping centres (Acropolis, Agora Mall, Blue Mall) for international brands. Arturo Fuente, Davidoff, La Aurora cigars and Brugal Centenario or Barceló Imperial Maximo rum make recommended gifts.
