Santo Domingo

Itineraries — Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo and the South is the essential cultural dimension of a Dominican trip — the one too often overlooked when confining oneself to Punta Cana's all-inclusive resorts, and yet the one that turns a standard beach stay into a genuine historical journey. The capital Santo Domingo, founded in 1496 by Bartolomé Columbus, is officially the first European city permanently established in the Americas — a weighty title materialised in a UNESCO Zona Colonial of exceptional heritage density.

The Zona Colonial (5 km²) concentrates within a few streets some of the New World's first monuments: Alcázar de Colón (first viceroyal palace, 1510), Catedral Primada de América (first cathedral, 1512-1540), Fortaleza Ozama (oldest European military fortress still standing, 1502-1505), Calle Las Damas (first paved street, 1502), Museo de las Casas Reales (former Captains General residence), Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino (first university in the Americas, 1538, founded 138 years before Harvard). This unique density makes Santo Domingo a cultural stop comparable to Havana or Cartagena for colonial history enthusiasts.

The country's South offers interesting beach and cultural complements: Boca Chica (the capital's beach, popular Dominican vibe), Juan Dolio (calm resort beach), Pomier Taíno caves (one of the Caribbean's most important rock art concentrations), Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia basilica at Higüey (major Dominican Marian pilgrimage site). But the essential remains the capital and its Zona Colonial — concentrate 2-3 nights minimum there for a genuine cultural experience.

Our key advice: always combine with a beach stay. The classic 7-night combo: 2 nights Zona Colonial + 5 nights Punta Cana or Bayahibe. The ideal 14-night combo: 3 nights Zona Colonial + 7 nights Bávaro or Bayahibe + 4 nights Samaná. Santo Domingo alone is a cultural stop; combined with the beach, it's a complete Dominican trip.
