Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Pula?+
One to two nights are enough to visit Pula itself. Plan a half-day for the amphitheatre (interior visit + basement), a half-day for the Forum, Temple of Augustus, Arch of the Sergii and the urban gates, and a half-day for the Venetian fortress and the Naval History Museum. A second night lets you add a beach day (Verudela, Stoja) or a Brijuni National Park trip (1 island, 30 minutes by boat, former summer residence of Tito). To explore Istria, extend with 3-4 nights in Rovinj then 1-2 in Motovun or Grožnjan.
How much is entry to the Pula amphitheatre?+
Entry to the Roman amphitheatre (Arena) costs __€10/adult__ in 2026 (€5/student 7-18, free under-7s). The ticket includes access to the arena, the preserved tiers and the basements where amphorae and replicas of ancient objects are displayed. The visit lasts 1-2 hours depending on interest. For summer concerts (June-September), tickets range from €30 (standing) to €150 (front row) depending on the artist. The Pula Film Festival (mid-July, 2 weeks) screens Croatian and international films in the arena every evening — tickets €10-15.
How do I get to Pula from London or Paris?+
Pula has an international airport (PUY) 6 km east of the centre. __From London__: Ryanair (Stansted), EasyJet (Gatwick), Jet2 (multiple), seasonal April-October, 2h30 flight, £80-200 return. __From Paris__: Croatia Airlines (CDG, May-October, 3-4 times/week), EasyJet (Orly, May-October), Volotea (Orly, June-September), Ryanair (Beauvais, April-October). 2h-2h05 flight, €80-150 return in low season, €180-350 in July-August. From the __airport to the centre__: bus n°23 (15 minutes, €2), taxi (10 minutes, €15-20). By __bus from Zagreb__: 3h30-4h, €25-35, 6-8 daily departures.
Is Brijuni National Park worth the trip?+
Yes, it's a recommended day trip if you stay several days in Pula or Rovinj. The __Brijuni Islands__ (Brioni in Italian) are an archipelago of 14 islands 30 minutes by boat north of Pula, national park since 1983. The main island (Veli Brijun) was __Tito's summer residence__ (1947-1980), where he received heads of state from around the world and built an exotic zoo of animals given as gifts (elephants, zebras, llamas — a few descendants survive). Roman remains (Verige villa), Byzantine basilica, Austrian-era 18-hole golf course. Visit obligatorily guided (boat + small train tour + site visits), €35-45 per person for the day, departure from Fažana (port 8 km north of Pula). Booking recommended in high season.
What are the best beaches near Pula?+
The best-known beaches are south of Pula, on the __Verudela peninsula__ (15 minutes by bus from the centre). __Verudela__: large pebble beach, beach hotels, restaurants. __Hawaiian Beach__ (Havajska plaža): quieter pebble cove, crystal water. __Stoja__: peninsula to the southwest, rocky beaches and pinewoods, popular campsite. __Pješčana Uvala__ ("sandy bay" in Croatian): one of Istria's few sand beaches. For wilder beaches, head to __Cape Kamenjak__ (natural park 15 km south, crystal coves and cliffs) or __Premantura island__. Pula itself has no city-centre beach — you need the bus or a car.
Pula or Rovinj as Istria base?+
It depends on your priorities. __Pula__: better airport access (direct flights), dense Roman heritage, slightly more affordable, urban feel, closer base for Brijuni and Cape Kamenjak. __Rovinj__: more charming Old Town (Venetian), better-quality gastronomy, more romantic atmosphere, closer base for Motovun and Grožnjan, more expensive. The __ideal__: 1-2 nights in Pula (arrival + amphitheatre + gastronomic dinner + Verudela beach), then 3-4 nights in Rovinj. You get the best of both. The Pula-Rovinj distance is 35 minutes by bus or car.

Our verdict

Pula is the ideal gateway to Istria and one of Croatia's most history-laden destinations. The Roman amphitheatre — one of the six best-preserved in the world — is worth the trip on its own, and the experience of a concert inside this thousand-year-old enclosure in summer is unique. The city is, however, less charming than Rovinj, and a 1- to 2-night stay is enough to cover the Roman monuments, the Forum, the Venetian fortress and a gastronomic dinner. If you fly into Pula, use the city as a base for 1-2 nights, then move on to Rovinj (35 minutes) for the Venetian charm and the Istrian hinterland. Ideal combination: 1 night in Pula (arrival + amphitheatre + dinner) + 3 nights in Rovinj + 1 day in Motovun for the truffle. Five days for true Istrian immersion.
