When to visit Paraty?

Minimum 2-3 nights to enjoy fully. D1 arrival, walk in historic centre (4 churches, alleys, artisan workshops), sunset drinks at Pontal. D2 full-day schooner outing (€50-80/person, 9am-4pm, 3-4 beaches and islands with lunch on board). D3 Trindade (taxi/bus 30 min, Cachadaço and Caixa d'Aço beaches, feet-in-water lunch) or Caminho do Ouro hike (4-6h in Atlantic Forest on imperial cobblestones). 4-5 nights allow adding Tobogã waterfall, Cachaça Route (3-4 tasting distilleries), Saco do Mamanguá excursion (Brazilian fjord 1h by boat, Pico do Cairuçu hike).

Paraty is 246 km south-west of Rio (BR-101 Rio-Santos road). Options. Costa Verde bus (Rio Novo Rio terminal → Paraty, 4h-4h30, 80-130 BRL ≈ €14-22, 6-8 departures daily) — economical and comfortable, air-conditioned. Private transfer (400-600 BRL ≈ €68-100, 3h30-4h, up to 4 people) — practical with luggage and family. Car rental (€30-50/day at GIG, Hertz/Localiza/Movida) — spectacular but winding BR-101 road along coast, count 4h with photo stops (overlooking views on Angra dos Reis). No commercial airport in Paraty itself. Recommended combinations: Rio (3-4 nights) + Paraty (3 nights) = classic 6-7 days. Rio (3 nights) + Búzios (2 nights) + Paraty (3 nights) = complete 8-9 day triangle alternating icon, chic beach and UNESCO heritage.

The historic centre is walked (1 km², 100% pedestrian zone, cobblestone). The 4 baroque churches witness colonial segregation: Santa Rita (1722, oldest, for free mulattos, today Sacred Art Museum), Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (cathedral, dedicated to whites), Igreja do Rosário (1725, dedicated to slaves), Igreja das Dores (white elite). Casa da Cultura (cultural centre with exhibitions and city history). Forte Defensor Perpétuo (1703, on hill 20 min walk, panoramic views over bay and centre). Artisan workshops: ceramics, painting, jewellery, wood sculpture. Art galleries: Paraty hosts many artists (FLIP festival attracts writers and creators). Municipal Market: tropical fruits, fresh fish, crafts. Pontal promenade: point with bay view at sunset (must-do). Tip: visit early morning (golden light, few people) or late afternoon (golden sunset on white facades).

The Caminho da Cachaça (Cachaça Route) groups the 23 artisanal distilleries of Paraty and surroundings, several recognised among Brazil's best. The region benefits from unique terroir for sugar cane (soil, climate, pure Serra do Mar water) and distillation tradition inherited from colonial era (copper alembics, natural fermentation). Star distilleries: Engenho d'Ouro (8 km from centre, one of most visited, 1h guided tour, 4-6 cachaça tasting, direct purchase €15-40/bottle by ageing), Coqueiro (12 km, family atmosphere, traditional alembic), Pedra Branca (old cachaças in oak barrels, jaboticaba), Maria Izabel (6 km, internationally awarded, IG Paraty certified since 2007).
