Búzios
Brazil's __chic beach resort__ — 23 distinct beaches on an 8 km peninsula, tropical Saint-Tropez atmosphere globally propelled by Brigitte Bardot in 1964, gourmet restaurants and designer boutiques on the mythical Rua das Pedras.
Búzios (officially Armação dos Búzios, 35,000 inhabitants, 173 km north-east of Rio in Rio de Janeiro state) is Brazil's chic beach resort — the tropical equivalent of Saint-Tropez, propelled onto the world stage in 1964 when Brigitte Bardot stayed three months with her Brazilian companion Bob Zagury. Before that, it was a simple fishing village on an 8 km peninsula, sculpted by winds and sea into 23 distinct beaches. Today, it's one of Brazil's most prized beach destinations — preferred by Cariocas (Rio residents) for weekends, by Argentinians en masse during austral summer (December-March), and by international travellers seeking a chic complement to Rio.
Búzios' geography is unique. The peninsula, advancing into the Atlantic Ocean between Manguinhos Bay to the south and Armação Bay to the north, is carved by 23 beaches with sharply distinct personalities — some ocean-facing (agitated seas, surf, wild beaches), others facing sheltered bays (calm sea, turquoise waters, family swimming), still others secret and accessible only by foot or boat. This diversity makes Búzios' charm — each day you can choose a different beach by mood (calm, party, snorkelling, surf).
Iconic beaches. Praia da Ferradura (horseshoe-shaped, 1.5 km, calm turquoise waters ideal for families, chair and umbrella rental, restaurant kiosks, one of Brazil's most beautiful beaches according to Condé Nast). Praia Geribá (2 km ocean-facing, surf and beach bars, the most festive and young, student vibe, sea-view sunset). Praia João Fernandes and Praia João Fernandinho (extraordinarily turquoise calm waters, exceptional snorkelling, among the peninsula's most beautiful beaches, difficult access in high season but unforgettable). Praia Brava (wild and preserved, calmer atmosphere, hike to access). Praia Tartaruga (protected beach, calm waters, ideal for diving and snorkelling). Praia Olho de Boi (nudist beach, accessible only by foot via 15 min trail, relaxed vibe). Praia Azeda and Azedinha (two adjacent beaches accessible by foot from Centro or water taxi, turquoise waters, bohemian vibe).
The Rua das Pedras is Búzios' living heart — 500 m of cobblestone pedestrian street along Armação Bay, lined with gourmet restaurants (French-Brazilian Cigalon, Italian O Barco, Japanese Sukão, Capricciosa pizzas, Argentinian Estancia Don Juan), chic bars (Estancia, Privilege, Pacha for clubbing), designer boutiques (fashion, jewellery, Brazilian crafts). This is where Búzios livens up until 3am during austral summer. On the Orla Bardot (seafront promenade extending Rua das Pedras), the Brigitte Bardot statue (1999, life-size bronze by artist Christina Motta, icon seated on a bench facing the sea) commemorates the French actress's role in globalising Búzios.
Daytime life revolves around beaches and excursions. The most iconic: schooner or catamaran cruise around the peninsula (€40-60/person, 9am-5pm day, several stops on the most beautiful beaches — João Fernandes, Tartaruga, Azeda, Brava — with snorkelling, lunch on board or beach). Other excursions: Búzios island (by boat, deserted beach), diving courses (3 main sites, €50-80/outing), hiking (beach trail connecting Brava-João Fernandes-Olho de Boi, 2-3h).

Our verdict
Búzios is the ideal chic extension of a Rio stay — 2h30-3h transfer from the metropolis to discover a sophisticated beach resort with 23 distinct beaches, propelled globally by Brigitte Bardot in 1964. Our recommendation: plan 2-3 nights in Búzios after 3-4 nights in Rio (complete 6-7 day formula). Choose a pousada near Rua das Pedras (Casas Brancas, Pérola Búzios, Insolito Boutique Hotel — €150-400/night by standing) for practicality, or at Praia da Ferradura (Le Relais La Borie, Sandhouse — €200-500/night) for direct access to one of the most beautiful beaches. Travel from November to May for warm sea and festive vibe (but high rates and crowds), or from June to October for calm and accessible rates (but cooler sea). Our preferred windows: April (post-season, perfect climate, reasonable rates) and November (pre-season, sea still warm). Don't miss the schooner cruise (€40-60/day, the must-do to discover secret beaches) and a dinner on Rua das Pedras.
