Frequently asked questions

How many days for Búzios?+
Minimum 2-3 nights to enjoy peacefully. D1 arrival, lunch Rua das Pedras, afternoon Geribá or Ferradura beach, sunset Orla Bardot, dinner. D2 full-day schooner cruise (€40-60/person, João Fernandes, Tartaruga, Azeda beaches, lunch on board), evening Rua das Pedras. D3 beach of choice in morning (Praia da Ferradura or wild Praia Brava), afternoon lounging or diving, departure or night. 3-4 nights allow exploring more beaches (Olho de Boi nudist by foot, Tartaruga snorkelling, Praia Azeda by water taxi) and fully enjoying gastronomy.
Which Búzios beach to choose?+
The 23 beaches have very distinct personalities. Praia da Ferradura (horseshoe shape, calm turquoise waters, ideal families, kiosks and restaurants, among Brazil's most beautiful beaches). Praia Geribá (ocean-facing, surf, beach bars, the youngest and most festive). Praia João Fernandes and João Fernandinho (exceptionally calm turquoise waters, snorkelling, water taxi or catamaran access). Praia Brava (wild and preserved, hike to access, calm atmosphere). Praia Tartaruga (calm waters, ideal diving and snorkelling). Praia Olho de Boi (nudist beach, 15 min trail, relaxed vibe). Praia Azeda and Azedinha (turquoise waters, bohemian vibe, walking accessible from Centro). Our recommendation: Ferradura as daily base (chic and calm), Geribá for social life and sunset, João Fernandes via catamaran for paradise waters.
How to get to Búzios from Rio?+
Búzios is 173 km north-east of Rio (BR-101 then RJ-106 road). Options. Bus 1001 (Rio Novo Rio terminal → Búzios, 3h, 70-110 BRL ≈ €12-19, every 30 min departures) — most economical and reliable. Private transfer (250-400 BRL, 2h30-3h, up to 4 people) — comfort and flexibility, ideal for families. Car rental (€30-50/day at GIG, Hertz/Localiza/Movida) — maximum autonomy, easy BR-101 road but possible Friday-evening and Sunday-evening traffic jams. Latam São Paulo-Cabo Frio (CFB) flight: 1h, €100-200 return (1-2 flights/day, regional airport 30 min from Búzios by taxi 100-150 BRL). No commercial airport in Búzios itself. Recommended combinations: Rio (3-4 nights) + Búzios (2-3 nights) = classic 5-7 days. Búzios (2 nights) + Rio (4 nights) + Paraty (2-3 nights) = complete 8-9 day triangle.
Which hotel to choose in Búzios?+
Búzios offers excellent range of pousadas (chic guesthouses) and boutique hotels. High-end (€300-700/night): Casas Brancas (Praia da Armação, bay view, legendary for spa and restaurant), Insolito Boutique Hotel & Spa (Praia da Ferradura, contemporary design suites), Hotel Pérola (Rua das Pedras centre, sea view, jet-set vibe). Comfort 4* (€150-300/night): Le Relais La Borie (Praia da Ferradura, French charm), Sandhouse (Praia da Ferradura, tropical design), Vila d'Este (Praia João Fernandes, exceptional view), Vila do Tao Búzios (centre, tropical garden). Charming pousadas (€80-150/night): Pousada Búzios Centro, Pousada Vila Boa Vida, Pousada da Praia. Economical (€50-100/night): modest hostels and pousadas near centre. Our recommendations: Casas Brancas for romantic luxury (couples), Sandhouse for chic beach, Le Relais La Borie for French-tropical charm. Book 3-6 months ahead in high season (December-March).
What to eat and drink in Búzios?+
Búzios is one of the gastronomic capitals of the Brazilian coast — cosmopolitan heritage (Bardot and international jet-set attracted European chefs and restaurateurs). On Rua das Pedras: Cigalon (French-Brazilian cuisine, sea-view terrace, €60-100/person), O Barco (Italian, romantic vibe, €50-90), Sukão (Japanese-Peruvian, exceptional sushi, €60-100), Capricciosa (Neapolitan pizzas, €30-50), Estancia Don Juan (Argentinian steakhouse, charcoal-grilled meat, €50-80). Beaches: kiosks with moqueca, peixe grelhado (grilled fish), camarão (shrimp), açaí bowl. Local specialties: peixe na telha (fish cooked on clay tile in oven, spectacular presentation), camarão na moranga (shrimp in pumpkin — festive dish), moqueca capixaba (fish in coconut-coriander sauce, light version without dendê). Drinks: artisanal cachaça caipirinha (essential, €6-12), caipiroska (with vodka), caipifruta (with tropical fruits mango, passion fruit). Breakfast: magnificent included in most pousadas (fresh juices, tropical fruits, pão de queijo, tapioca). Dinner: Rua das Pedras animates from 7pm to 1am-3am by season.

Our verdict

Búzios is the ideal chic extension of a Rio stay — 2h30-3h transfer from the metropolis to discover a sophisticated beach resort with 23 distinct beaches, propelled globally by Brigitte Bardot in 1964. Our recommendation: plan 2-3 nights in Búzios after 3-4 nights in Rio (complete 6-7 day formula). Choose a pousada near Rua das Pedras (Casas Brancas, Pérola Búzios, Insolito Boutique Hotel — €150-400/night by standing) for practicality, or at Praia da Ferradura (Le Relais La Borie, Sandhouse — €200-500/night) for direct access to one of the most beautiful beaches. Travel from November to May for warm sea and festive vibe (but high rates and crowds), or from June to October for calm and accessible rates (but cooler sea). Our preferred windows: April (post-season, perfect climate, reasonable rates) and November (pre-season, sea still warm). Don't miss the schooner cruise (€40-60/day, the must-do to discover secret beaches) and a dinner on Rua das Pedras.
