Med Coast

When to go — Med Coast

The Turkish Mediterranean Coast enjoys Turkey's mildest and sunniest climate — typical Mediterranean with 300 sunny days per year in Antalya. The beach tourist season runs from April to October.

May and June are the recommended months for travellers seeking to combine warm sea (starts at 20-23°C in May to reach 23-25°C in June), pleasant temperatures (22-28°C) and manageable crowds. Beaches in Antalya, Side and Olympos are still little frequented, hotel rates reasonable (3-4 stars at €60-120/night), and Lycian Way hikes benefit from perfect temperatures (18-22°C at altitude). Mediterranean flowering (oleanders, bougainvillea, jasmine) is at its peak. Some thunderstorms possible in May but brief.

July and August are the prime beach months for sun and warm sea enthusiasts. The Mediterranean Sea reaches 26-28°C, the sky is invariably blue, days stretch from 5:30am to 8:30pm. But it is also the massive high tourist season — packed beaches, resorts fully booked 2-3 months ahead, exploded prices (x2-3 vs spring), intense nightlife until 5am in Kemer and Lara clubs. The heat (35-42°C midday) makes visits to ancient sites (Aspendos, Termessos) gruelling — prefer dawn or late afternoon. Lycian Way hikes are not recommended in July-August (high health risk).

September and October offer the ideal compromise for most travellers: still warm sea (26-28°C in September, 23-25°C in October), pleasant temperatures (25-30°C in September, 22-26°C in October), declining crowds after 15 September, noticeable price drop. Russians, Germans and Dutch make up most of the autumn clientele, creating an international atmosphere. The Aspendos Opera & Ballet Festival (September) animates the Roman ruins. October brings the first rains but they remain occasional. Lycian Way hikes are remarkable in September-November.

November to April correspond to the low season. The sea is cold (16-20°C) — swimming excluded. Rains are frequent (60-100 mm/month from December to February). However, the climate in Antalya remains mild (15-20°C in winter, one of the mildest winters in continental Turkey) — golf, light hiking and exploration of ancient sites remain pleasant. Many beach resorts (Kemer, Olympos, Side) close from November to March. Urban hotels in Antalya remain open at reduced rates (3-star at €40-70/night). Lycian Way hikes are possible in winter for experienced walkers (cool but pleasant temperatures, 8-15°C). No direct European flights in winter — Istanbul stopover required.
