Cappadocia is one of the most iconic destinations in Turkey and the world — a unique geological landscape combined with an aerial experience (the balloons) that has gone viral in the imagination of modern travel. The region, located in the heart of central Anatolia between Ankara and the Taurus range, covers about 5,000 km² around the Nevşehir-Ürgüp-Göreme-Avanos-Üçhisar axis. Its singularity rests on three inseparable pillars: volcanic geology (fairy chimneys, valleys, canyons), Byzantine heritage (rock-cut churches, underground cities) and the contemporary experience (cave hotels, hot-air balloons).
For a short stay (2-3 days), focus on Göreme and its immediate surroundings. Day 1: sunrise balloon flight (5am), breakfast at cave hotel, visit to Göreme Open Air Museum, hike in Rose Valley. Day 2: 'Red' tour (northern valleys) or 'Green' (Derinkuyu + Ihlara south). Day 3: Üçhisar (citadel and panoramic view) + Avanos (pottery + handcraft workshop).
With a week (5-7 days), the itinerary expands significantly. Add Ürgüp and Cappadocian vineyards, Soğanlı Valley (more remote, preserved Byzantine churches), Mount Erciyes (3,917 m, skiing in winter), Mustafapaşa (preserved former Greek village), a day of quad biking or horseback riding in the valleys, and a whirling dervishes show (sema ceremony in a Seljuk caravanserai at Sarıhan). Cappadocia deserves each additional day — the region is more vast than it appears and is full of surprises beyond the Göreme tourist core.
