Cappadocia is a sprawling region (50 km north-south, 40 km east-west) that requires travel organisation. The main tourist centre — Göreme, Üçhisar, Ürgüp — forms a 15 km triangle where distances remain manageable, but major sites (Derinkuyu, Ihlara, Sarıhan) are sometimes 1h-1h30 by road.
The closest airport is Kayseri-Erkilet (ASR), 1h drive from Göreme — daily flights from Istanbul (IST and SAW), Ankara, Izmir with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AnadoluJet (1h15 flight, €40-100 return). The secondary airport Nevşehir-Kapadokya (NAV) is closer (40 min from Göreme) but less served. Havabus shuttles from both airports to Göreme/Ürgüp (€10-15, 1h). Taxi €50-70 from Kayseri.
In the region, three transport options.
Rental car — the most flexible, essential for distant sites (Derinkuyu, Ihlara, Soğanlı, Mount Erciyes). Expect €25-50/day for a compact, agencies at Kayseri airport or directly in Göreme/Nevşehir (Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Localiza). Right-hand driving, roads in good condition, correct signage. Free and easy parking in Cappadocian villages.
Organised group tours — practical solution without a car. Three classic tours: Red Tour (northern valleys — Devrent, Paşabağ, Avanos, Open Air Museum); Green Tour (south — Derinkuyu, Ihlara, Selime); Blue Tour (northeast — Soğanlı, Mount Erciyes). Rate €30-60/day with English-speaking guide, lunch included, 8-15 people per group. Recommended companies: Cappadocia Tours, Argeus Tourism, Heritage Travel.
Quad, electric bike, horseback riding — to explore the immediate valleys around Göreme. Quad rental €30-80/day (with or without guide). Electric bike €20-40/day. Horseback riding (2-3h outing) €30-60. Excellent formula to combine adventure and photography at sunset in the Göreme valleys.
Taxis are available between villages but expensive (€10-15 for Göreme-Üçhisar, €30-50 for Göreme-Derinkuyu). The BiTaksi app does not work in Cappadocia — negotiate with local drivers or ask your hotel to organise. No useful public transport for tourists between sites.
