Phuket
Thailand's largest island: Andaman beaches, excursions to the Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay, and legendary nightlife in Patong.
Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and one of the most popular beach destinations in Southeast Asia. Its appeal rests on a rare combination: white-sand beaches lining a turquoise Andaman Sea, a network of excursions to exceptional sites (Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi Islands, the Similan reefs), a lively nightlife in Patong, and a hotel infrastructure that covers every budget, from beach bungalow to oceanfront palace.
The island has around a dozen beaches with very different characters. Patong is the busiest — almost a holiday town in its own right, with bars, clubs, restaurants and a 3 km beach packed year-round. Kata and Kata Noi are more family-friendly, framed by cliffs and accessible to beginner surfers from November to March. Surin and Kamala, on the central west coast, draw travellers looking for more peace and a more local crowd. Phuket Town, the island's Sino-Portuguese old town, rewards the curious with a handsome quarter of colourful colonial houses, authentic street food and Chinese temples.
Beyond the beaches, what makes Phuket work as a destination is its position as a regional hub. A 90-minute speedboat reaches the Phi Phi Islands; an hour by long-tail puts you among the karst towers of Phang Nga Bay; a liveaboard takes you to the Similan Islands — one of the great Asian dive sites. Even if the island itself has been heavily developed, it remains the most convenient launchpad for the wider Andaman.
What we love
- ✅Varied beaches for every profile: Patong's buzz, Surin's calm, Kata's surf
- ✅World-class excursions: Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island), Similan diving
- ✅Hotel infrastructure among the best in Asia for every budget
- ✅Legendary nightlife in Patong for party travellers
- ✅International airport linked to many European cities via Bangkok
What to know
- ❌Patong Beach overcrowded and urbanised in high season — far from the paradise image
- ❌Intense monsoon from May to October: sea unusable, some beaches closed
- ❌Phuket has lost its authentic-island feel — heavily developed and touristy
- ❌Frequent scams: scooter rental tricks, gem sellers, fake tour operators

Our verdict
Phuket is the most complete beach destination in Thailand: its beaches, excursions and infrastructure make it the ideal gateway to the south of the country. It is no longer an authentic island — massive tourist development has turned some areas into full-blown international resort towns. To get the best out of it, come between November and March, pick your beach to suit your style (Kata for calm, Patong for energy), and book your excursions to the Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay as early as possible.
Our take: combine 4-5 nights on Phuket with 3 nights in Krabi for a complete southern Thai itinerary. The two destinations are linked by ferry (2h30) or shared bus (3h), and together they show off two complementary faces of the Andaman coast. Treat Patong as a one-night curiosity if you want the nightlife, then move along the coast to Kata, Surin or Kamala for the actual holiday.
