Frequently asked questions

Is Phuket worth visiting?+
Yes — provided you pick the right beach and the right season. Phuket is heavily developed and Patong in particular can feel like Benidorm-on-the-Andaman, but the island remains the best regional hub for excursions to the Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay and the Similan diving sites. Stay in Kata, Surin or Kamala rather than Patong, come in the November-March window, and Phuket delivers.
Which beach should I choose in Phuket?+
Kata and Kata Noi for families and beginner surfers (good waves, fewer crowds). Surin and Kamala for calm and charm. Patong for nightlife and energy. Nai Harn in the south for a wilder beach. Bangtao for luxury resorts in peace. Avoid Rawai and Chalong for swimming (shallow water, boats).
When is the best time to visit Phuket?+
November to April is the ideal dry season: calm sea, blue sky, perfect underwater visibility for diving. December to March is absolute high season. May to October is the monsoon: rough seas, red flags often up, very low rates. November is an excellent compromise of weather and price, with the island gearing back up for the season.
How do I get to Phuket from Europe?+
Several daily flights serve Phuket international airport (HKT) from Europe via Bangkok. Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines run the main routes. Return fares: €550-950 booked 2-3 months ahead. From the airport, taxi or minivan to the centre (400-600 THB depending on beach).
Are Phi Phi Islands day trips from Phuket worth it?+
Yes — the Phuket–Koh Phi Phi Don speedboat takes 1h30 (350-500 THB). The day excursion is the most popular, but spending 1 to 2 nights on the island delivers a vastly superior experience: the day-trippers leave at 4 pm and the evenings on Phi Phi are magnificent. Maya Bay (made famous by The Beach) deserves a dedicated morning slot.
Is Phuket safe for tourists?+
Yes, broadly. The most common scams involve scooters (fictitious damage charged on return), gems (fraudulent jewellers) and fake tours. Use Grab for taxis and book excursions through recognised operators. Swimming is safe on beaches without red flags; remain vigilant during monsoon when currents can be strong. Phuket safety, with these reasonable precautions, is on a par with most major beach destinations.
Should I rent a scooter in Phuket?+
It's possible (200-350 THB/day) but risky: traffic on the main roads is heavy, and accidents involving tourists are common. If you do rent a scooter, wear a helmet, avoid rush hour on Patong and wet hill roads. The alternative: Grab (ride-hailing) or shared songthaews for the main trips. Photograph the bike from every angle before driving off to protect against scam claims.
What's the difference between Phuket and Krabi?+
Phuket is larger, more developed, with an international airport, intense nightlife and more hotel options. Krabi is more intimate, with more spectacular karst landscapes and direct access to Railay Beach, one of the most beautiful in Thailand. The two combine easily (ferry or bus, 2-3 hours) and many travellers split a southern week 50/50 between them.
How much does a week in Phuket cost?+
In comfort mode (decent hotel, varied meals, 2-3 excursions), count €55-80 per day, or €385-560 for a week excluding flights. A backpacker (hostel, street food, group excursions) can drop to €35-45 a day. A honeymooning couple in a resort with private pool and private excursions will spend €150-250 a day.

Our verdict

Phuket is the most complete beach destination in Thailand: its beaches, excursions and infrastructure make it the ideal gateway to the south of the country. It is no longer an authentic island — massive tourist development has turned some areas into full-blown international resort towns. To get the best out of it, come between November and March, pick your beach to suit your style (Kata for calm, Patong for energy), and book your excursions to the Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay as early as possible.

Our take: combine 4-5 nights on Phuket with 3 nights in Krabi for a complete southern Thai itinerary. The two destinations are linked by ferry (2h30) or shared bus (3h), and together they show off two complementary faces of the Andaman coast. Treat Patong as a one-night curiosity if you want the nightlife, then move along the coast to Kata, Surin or Kamala for the actual holiday.
