Stone Town offers a diversity of experiences that justify 1-2 full days of visiting.
The major historical sites chain on a 3-4 hour walking loop. The House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib, Mizingani Road) is the former palace of Sultan Barghash (1883), first building in East Africa to have electricity and an elevator — symbol of Zanzibari modernity at the end of the 19th century. The building partially collapsed in 2020 and is under major restoration until 2026-2027 — exterior visible but interior closed. The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe, opposite the House of Wonders) is an 18th-century Omani fortress built on the ruins of a 16th-century Portuguese church. Today: amphitheatre, craft workshops, cafés, temporary exhibitions. Free entry.
The former slave market and its memorial (Mkunazini Road) is an emotionally strong but essential visit. The site includes the original two slave cells (where up to 75 people were locked huddled in 30 m²), the memorial sculpture of 5 chained slaves emerging from a pit, the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral (built by the British in 1873 immediately after abolition), and a small museum tracing the history of the East African trade. 8 USD/person, count 1h-1h30 of visit.
The markets are the commercial and social soul of Stone Town. The Darajani market (Creek Road, open daily 6 am-6 pm) is the main market: spices as far as the eye can see, fresh fish in the morning, meats, tropical fruits.
In the evening, the main experience is the Forodhani Gardens night market (seafront, open every evening 6-10 pm). About fifty stalls set up on the promenade — freshly caught seafood grills (octopus, squid, parrotfish, lobster), meat skewers, samosas, urojo, Zanzibar pizzas, freshly pressed sugarcane juice. Count €10-15 for a complete and copious dinner.
Swahili cooking classes (3-4 hours, 50-80 USD/person) are an excellent cultural activity. Visit of Darajani market with a chef to buy ingredients, then collective cooking in a traditional Swahili house, followed by a shared lunch.
Day excursions from Stone Town complete the experience. The spice plantation (Kizimbani, half-day 25-40 USD/person), Prison/Changuu Island (half-day 30 USD/person, departure from Stone Town port by boat 30 min), Bawe Island (snorkeling + lunch, half-day 50-70 USD/person).
